At The Crossroads of Demographics & Economics
So much of what drives contemporary markets, economics, governments and finances is tied up in a fifty
year-long pattern of aging which many of us struggle to put in perspective.
• Why is the social security system under pressure?
• Why are interest rates so low?
• Why hasn’t employment bounced back since the recession as much as we hoped?
• Why have airlines and auto manufacturers had to discontinue their pension programs?
It’s clear that the answers will not be found by looking at each piece in isolation. They form a mosaic of issues which have
arisen since the post baby boom generation has reached retirement age and are living longer than any generation before them.
With advancements in healthcare and social services come longer life – but how will the promised retirement and social programs
that they have paid into over their lifetimes get paid for?
The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven members will get an apolitical, fact-based look at why the U.S. is borrowing
at its current rate; touching upon various elements of the economics of social trends illustrated in fascinating ways from a variety
of sources. The audience will walk away with new ways of framing the questions, a more reasoned approach to understanding the
underlying issues, and a broader canvas to appreciate the global dynamics at work.
