Good Afternoon…
Let me try that again..… Good Afternoon…
That’s more like it… Hi… I’m Rob Howard, but everyone here can call me MR. ROB.
I’m a Software Developer at one of the BEST software companies in the world “Thomson Reuters” and I’ve been developing software since I was your age.
Here’s a picture of that first computer…. Pretty rough huh!
Can anyone tell me what Software is? … That’s right… software is pretty much instructions that tell a computer what to do!
And I build software the make people’s jobs easier and faster which in turn helps them to make money!
But last but not least WE HAVE FUN AT WORK….
AND AS MY BOSS ALWAYS SAYS….
First thing’s first…. I gotta know…..”
Playstation or Xbox
I’m an Xbox fan myself, but it doesn’t matter, really … they’re both computers..
Just like tables, laptops, phones… some of you might even have smart watches like this one.
Those are computers too. And they all run software… apps…. games… created by software developers like me.
And speaking of phones…. Here’s another one…..
Android or Apple iOS
Like I said… they’re both computers…..
Doge or Hello Kitty or Pusheen
Okay none of these are computers, but they are on the web so someone designed and programmed them to appear on the page.
Let me ask you all…. Has anyone in here ever had a really cool idea for an app or game that didn’t already exist…
or some way of making an app or game better?
Did you know you can sometimes write a program to do your homework?
Who here wants to make a program to do their homework?
Well, that’s what software developers do. They take those ideas and they make them happen.
And I believe YOU ALL already have what it takes to make the next greatest app or game by becoming a software developer!
Like flappybird… anyone ever play this game?
Did you know that the guy.. the one guy who made this silly game was making $50,000 dollars per day before he decided to take it off the app store!
Angry Birds…any of you ever play this game?
Well the people that created Angry Birds make over 200 million dollars a year!
That’s insane!!!
And for my sports fans…. Who likes basketball?
Anybody played this software?
NBA 2K16…. Oh my!!! $365 million dollars a year. That’s a lot of money!
Anyone played this game…..
Mindcraft… the software developer who made this game was making $326 Million Dollars a year
and then he sold the game to microsoft for $2.5 BILLION DOLLARS
So What does a software developer look like?
Okay Everybody… Close your eyes and think in your head what you think a software developer looks like.
Today we have computer software that will take you guys and girls thoughts and then it will put them on the screen. Now this is really neat.
Hey….. Who thought of that one…
And.. while I do consider myself a nerd, I’m pretty sure I don’t look anything like this…
I mean… sometimes I wear glasses … but come on ya’ll… I don’t look like that.
Look at that guy! My goodness… where is he???
I hope you don’t think I look like that…
Now what is that… Who thought of that… you guys are funny!
That’s not what a software developer looks like..
Software developers and engineers are cool. In fact, this is what I think software developers look like.
That’s right… Every day when I go to work, I feel like a super hero.
My boss comes to me and says, ‘Rob, I need you to build something awesome, and you’re the only one that can do it!
And then I do it! I save the day! I make people’s lives easier. I make people happier. I help people to have a better day.
How did that get in there… my crazy hackers..
That’s just a picture of a dog in a super hero costume..
Here’s another software developer….
Anybody know who this is?
Yep that’s my old facebook friend…. Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook…
he’s 31 years old and the 60th richest person on earth and he’s worth $35 BILLION Dollars…
Here’s another software developer….
Anybody know who this is?
This is the CEO of Yahoo…
Her name is Marissa Mayer and she’s a one of the richest women software engineers.
She was also the first female software engineer at Google.
She’s worth $380 million dollars and makes $120 million dollars every year. I don’t know about you… but that’s a lot of money!!
At 40 years old she’s one of the 50th most powerful Women in Business.
Here’s another software developer…
Anybody know who this is?
That’s right… Billy Gates… ol’ buddy ol pal… he is worth 55 BILLION dollars. That’s like making $300 every second.
He’s the RICHEST person on the planet.. let that sink in for a moment.
And he’s a software developer! Just like me… I mean, I don’t even make a million dollars, but I know someday I can because I’m a software developer. I take ideas and I make them happen.
Bill Gates came up with Windows and the XBox and made it happen.
Are computers smart or dumb?
Can I get a show of hands of those who think computers are smart? Those who think they are dumb?
Computers are actually really dumb!
They only do what we tell them to do. Without the operating system which is the software that runs the computer.. the computer is basically just a pile of plastic, metal and glass.
Software Developers have to tell the computer what to do….
And to demonstrate that, I’m going to perform a little experiment with your help…
It’s Peanut butter jelly time….
Does anyone like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? Me too… I eat them all the time.
So take a look at this fancy diagram of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
I’m going to need YOU to tell me all of the instructions for building a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Kinda like how a software developer writes code for things like apps, games and websites… then I’m going to be the computer and do those instructions.
Okay guys this will be really easy, but I’ll need you guys to raise your hand so that you can give the computer, which is me, an instruction.
And when we’re finished I’ll make the sandwich.
So what do we do first?
What do we do next?
Open the bag of bread
Put one piece of bread to the side
Put peanut button on one piece of bread
Put jelly on the other piece of bread
Smash them together.
Okay, I think that’s all the instructions. Thank you guys!
Look at that cute little doggy… Let’s imagine he’s our boss at work waiting on the sandwich!
Now that I have my instructions, I’m going to do them just like a computer would do them… Now remember… I’m a dumb computer.
“First, I’m supposed to open the bag” -- Grab the bag with 2 hands and rip it open
“Next I put one piece of bread to the side – Grab a piece of bread and throw it across the room
Now I put the peanut butter on of the slices of bread. Well… they didn’t say which side of the spatula to use… I’ll use this end (Wrong end)
And they didn’t say how much peanut butter to use… so this seems about right – GIANT.. and Glob of peanut butter – repeat for the jelly)
Smash them together, he said… right? Really? … Ohhh . I really don’t think this is a good idea.
They didn’t say if the peanut butter and jelly should go on the inside or outside… so I’ll just do it this way.
Now bite into it while they’re all laughing
Let’s just say this program has a few bugs in it… not real bugs, Bugs are like glitches in the program or instructions that need fixing.
As you all see, you have to be very precise. Remember, computers are dumb and they only do what you tell them to do!
If this were a real program, we’d need to make a few adjustments to the program and then re-test..
I think we all know things would turn out better next time.
