Jesus is the Divine Son who identifies with
us and overcomes for us by His death upon
the cross.
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of
Galilee and was baptized by John in the
Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the
water, immediately he saw the heavens being
torn open and the Spirit descending on him
like a dove. 11 And a voice came from
heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I
am well pleased.
12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into
the wilderness. 13 And he was in the
wilderness forty days, being tempted
by Satan. And he was with the wild animals,
and the angels were ministering to him (Mark
1:9-13).
Jesus identifies with us in the water (v. 9).
John would have prevented him, saying, “I
need to be baptized by you, and do you
come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered
him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting
for us to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew
3:13-15).
“I have a baptism to be baptized with, and
how great is my distress until it is
accomplished" (Luke 12:50).
As we see Jesus here in the water, he
already indicates how he will become our
savior: by standing in the river in whose
waters penitent Jews had symbolically
washed away their sins, and allowing that
water, polluted by those sins, to be poured
over his perfect being.-Sinclair Furguson
“For our sake he made him to be sin who
knew no sin, so that in him we might
become the righteousness of God.” By
climbing in the water, Jesus—the sinless
one—identifies with the sinner" (2 Cor.
5:21).
The Father identifies with Jesus in the water
(v. 10-11).
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the midst of his brothers.
And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David
from that day forward (1 Samuel 16:13).
I will tell of a decree: The LORD said to me,
“You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your
heritage, and the ends of the earth your
possession (Psalm 2:7-8).
Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my
chosen, in whom my soul delights (my
beloved); I have put my Spirit upon him; he
will bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah
42:1).
We identify with Jesus’s victory in the
wilderness (v.12-13).
The LORD God said to the serpent,
because you have done this, cursed are you
above all livestock and above all the beasts
of the field; on you belly you shall eat all
the days of your life. I will put enmity
between you and the woman, and between
your offspring and her offspring; he shall
bruise your head, and you shall bruise his
heel (Gen. 3:14).
