09.30 - 12.30 Workshop A
The Classroom of the Future - How best to implement technology into the curriculum with lessons learned from
the US Navy approach to fleet-wide MRO training strategy.
Many assets utilised by global navies require ever more technical MRO procedures. This combined with the pressure of
quicker turnaround times and operational demand, creates a very challenging environment in which to work. The need
for a continued high-level training programme puts huge strain on the ability of a team to continually evolve to meet the
demands of its vessel. A look towards the future of potential technology and training methods in the classroom will help
further develop the functionality of all units.
Benefits of attending this workshop:
w This workshop will discuss the need for a strong focus on continual development of the current training schemes, with
a look to future strategy
w An overview of the approach to provide all staff with the same key skill set as a pose to training staff for individual
vessels - creating a more versatile work force
w A discussion on further enhancement of the value of MRO strategy to ensure not only that technological advances are
implemented correctly into the curriculum, but that suitable provisions are made for future development
w The best method to ensure effective knowledge management to enable Navies to continue to build upon their
expertise despite the increasing involvement of industry
Lead by Ryan Merriman, Centre for Naval Engineering, Naval Station Norfolk, US Navy
13.30 - 16.30 Workshop B
How to Achieve and Sustain Successful Partnering in Long Term Business Relationships
Successful collaboration within the defence sector is the key to developing innovative and cost-effective solutions for the
delivery of excellent equipment and services. This is particularly important in the context of long-term programmes based
upon delivering specified operational capabilities which are likely to involve many different MoD suppliers over the years.
A recently published British Standard - BS11000 - is the world’s first guide to achieving successful collaborative business
relationships and was written jointly by BSI and PSL.
PSL are running this workshop which will explain the concepts of BS1100 and consolidate this with the use of a simple
but challenging practical interactive exercise.
Benefits of attending this workshop:
w An explanation of why and how BS11000 was written
w To provide you with understanding of the eight stages (as set out in BS 11000) of the creation and long term
management of a successful collaborative relationship
w Participate in a quick practical exercise, the BS 11000 ‘Ice-breaker’ (based on the eight stages) and apply this to the
real-life circumstances of the workshop participants
w Gain an understanding of: why, when and how to partner (based upon the guidance set out in BS11000)
w Help you to understand the methods of choosing an appropriate partner and working successfully with them in the
long term
w Allow you to appreciate how collaboration can add value to the delivery of a capability
w Provide an opportunity to have some introductory practical experience of BS11000
Lead by Nicky Painter, Robert Shields, Qualified BS 11000 Facilitators and Senior Associates of PSL (Partnership
Sourcing Ltd) and a Confirmed UK Navy Representative
