SHARE Update for DLF, October 2014
The SHARE initiative is developing a Notification Service to facilitate the preservation, access, and reuse of research outputs. They have been working on building the prototype Notification Service, which will provide structured reports of research release events like published articles and datasets to interested parties. The Center for Open Science is helping to harvest metadata from various sources to include in over 40,000 reports. The next steps include expanding the prototype and recruiting subscribers for a public beta release in early 2015 and full release in fall 2015. Challenges include encouraging the adoption of identifiers and dealing with scale, but benefits could include keeping researchers and institutions better informed of impacts.

Kafka Migration for Satellite Event Streaming Data | Eric Velte, ASRC Federal
ASRC Federal created the Mission Operator Assist (MOA) tool to extend human capabilities through AI/ML for NOAA. MOA ingests system log data from on-orbit satellite constellations and applies machine learning to greatly improve real-time situational awareness. MOA uses a collection of tools, including Kafka for multi-subscriber communications, all hosted through AWS Cloud Services and Kubernetes Containers for microservices. Like many traditional on-premises systems, satellite ground station operations are undergoing a renaissance as they increasingly become enabled by cloud.
During this session, the audience will learn about the satellite communications chain, and best practices and lessons learned in creating a data pipeline with Kafka for high throughput and scalability while displaying high quality situational awareness to mission operators. We will discuss our goals centered around establishing event-driven streaming for satellite logs so our machine learning becomes real-time and supporting a multi-subscriber approach for various Kafka topics. Listeners will also learn how a multi-subscriber approach using Kafka, helped us auto scale logstash based on how many messages are in the queue and other microservices.

Ata tailings treatment technology
The ATA Tailings Treatment Technology developed by Soane Mining can rapidly consolidate tailings streams into solid waste using a three part process. The process uses an Activator polymer to aggregate fine particles, Anchor particles coated with a Tether polymer to bind the aggregates, and produces clean water that can be recycled along with dewatered solids suitable for reclamation. This specialized polymer technology eliminates tailings impoundments while recovering water and treating existing impoundment areas to mitigate environmental liability.
Green Box
Green Box has developed technologies to process food contaminated post-consumer waste from fast food and other waste streams. This transforms the waste into high quality tissue pulps, paper cups containing up to 40% post-consumer waste approved by the FDA, tissue products, diesel fuel, biochar, and fuel pellets. The process has zero waste water discharge or landfill waste, and fully reclaims and sustains the waste streams.

Altranex, The Future of Fuel
Altranex develops bio-lubricants and transportation fuels from renewable sources like plants that have absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere. Specifically, their shipping fuel Altra-HFTM is made from renewable feedstocks like various plant oils and animal fats, is CO2 neutral, and contains almost no sulfur, meeting upcoming IMO regulations. It employs people in marginalized areas to collect, sort, and provide plastic waste for manufacturing. EcoPost has created over 500 jobs, recycled over 2 million kilograms of waste, manufactured over 30,000 building profiles to provide housing while saving forests. Their products provide a sustainable alternative to timber for construction in impoverished areas of Africa.
FastOX Gasification
This technology converts waste into energy through an efficient gasification process. The FastOx gasifier uses a simple, proven design to convert a wide variety of waste streams into syngas, inert stone, and recovered metals on a large scale. By injecting oxygen and steam into the bottom of the gasifier, it produces an energy-dense syngas. This gasification technology is also uniquely scalable, able to process from 5 to 30,000 tons of waste per day in a single unit.

Hydroplant (tm) System
The HydroPlantTM system uses an onboard electrolysis system to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gases and safely introduce them into the air intake of diesel engines. This improves fuel efficiency by up to 20% and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70% without needing high-pressure hydrogen storage. The system offers constant monitoring and can be retrofitted to standard vehicle engines to provide fuel savings and emissions reductions for industries like trucking, shipping, construction, and agriculture.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
