IUCN World Conservation Congress - Hawai’i 2016 Held once every four years, the IUCN World Conservation Congress looks to bring together change-makers from across the world, representing the brightest minds in academia, government, business, indigenous peoples and civil society to find innovative solutions for our planet. The IUCN World Conservation Congress therefore provides a unique and well-timed opportunity to add to the historic agreement at the UNFCCC COP Paris and will serve to mobilise action. The theme of this year’s Congress is “Planet at the crossroads”, highlighting the necessity for urgent change and the importance of making the right decisions now that will affect our planet and future generations. Instead of succumbing to a pessimist narrative, IUCN chooses instead to insist that we are ready and able to take on this important challenge and make great change together. We are very lucky to have inspiring marine conservation heroes in attendance, including the author of this year’s editorial, Sylvia Earle, an IUCN Patron of Nature and the founder of Mission Blue. Her presence, among other amazing attendees at this year’s Congress, will create an atmosphere of excitement and possibility that will set the scene for successful decision-making. At this year’s Congress, IUCN will release a landmark publication on ocean warming that is the most recent and comprehensive report ever published on the subject. Bringing together 80 scientists from 12 countries, this report seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis on the impacts of the ocean absorbing more than 93% of the enhanced heating from the greenhouse effect and other human activities since the 1970s. The report delves deep into this issue, analysing the impactsonoceanecosystems, species and even the deep remote ocean. It reviews the impacts and effects of ocean warming on specific seas and ecosystems ranging from micro-organisms up to marine turtles and mammals. The report also examines the impacts on ecosystem services. The upper 700m of the ocean contains the same heat content as ~240 times the global energy consumption in 2013 Ocean warming Results in a loss of OXYGEN in water, due to a re- duce of solubility; Impacting Ecosystems. Thereportprovidesanalysisof the existing and likely future economic consequences, including on the weather, the protection of coasts and on the contributions of fisheries and aquaculture. The report also importantly reviews as potential risks to human health and well-being. Finally, the report finishes by detailing what changes are currently underway and what we can expect from the future, with some key recommendations. It should be used to contribute to further discussion and thought on this subject, in particular at high-levels such as in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as well as for use by governments, agencies and experts worldwide. Ensuring the resiliency of our oceans is vital to the planet’s survival.
