Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson in 1926 in Los Angeles. Her mother was institutionalized when Monroe was young, and she lived in foster care and orphanages. She married young but divorced in 1946. Monroe then began modeling and acting, changing her name. She signed contracts with several studios but struggled to find major roles until breaking out in 1950. Monroe became a huge star during the 1950s but battled personal issues, marrying and divorcing Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller. Her career was halted by suspensions, and Monroe died under mysterious circumstances in 1962 at her Los Angeles home at age 36.
