- What is OSM? More details about the wider community. This “free world map goal” happens to be especially useful in times of crisis or disaster. This is where the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team comes in. We connect the more informal OSM community to traditional response organizations by coordinating digital volunteers and providing training/guidance to communities/organizations on the ground.

- The Crisismappers Network is informal, self-organized and global. Member include citizens, governments, research/academic, companies, open source organizations and almost every sector related to conflict and crisis informatics. - Soon we began seeing pictures like this. Maning Sambale from OSM-ph and a HOT member sent printed canvas maps to the Tacloban airport so there would be basemaps available for people to use. - In the first month over 1600 people provided 4.5 million map edits. This was all coordinating through the OSM Tasking Manager a tool HOT hosts that was originally built through some preparedness work in Indonesia with the Australia-Indonesia Facility for Disaster Reduction.

- Here is another map they made showing areas that had already been mapped by digital volunteers. Key to this response we our partners using the data. Groups such as the American Red Cross, World Bank, United Nations –Organization for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and others relied on the data to provide the basemap.
