We Are Men, Not Pigs Portfolio
Prime Marketing proposes a campaign called "We Are Men, Not Pigs" to address the issue of high sexual assault rates on college campuses. The campaign aims to educate college men, promote bystander intervention, change social norms around alcohol use, and increase awareness of the campus Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Tactics include a PSA video with fraternity members speaking out against assault, social media hashtags, informational posters and postcards, and promotional merchandise like wristbands. The goal is to lower assault rates, make lasting cultural changes, and empower students to seek help from campus resources.

Howell worked at the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) in the U.S. Department of Justice for 21 years, mostly as director of research and program development. He was also director, National Institute of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and deputy administrator of OJJDP. He currently is senior research associate with the National Youth Gang Center in Tallahassee, Florida, and special advisor to the Life History Research Program at the University of Pittsburgh. He is an associate editor of the journal Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice, and author of the book Juvenile Justice and Youth Violence (Sage), and lead editor of A Sourcebook: Serious, Violent, and Chronic Juvenile Offenders (Sage). Some of his more than 70 published works have appeared in Crime & Delinquency, Criminology, the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, and Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice. Dr. Howell is very active in helping States and localities reform their juvenile justice system and employ evidence-based programs, and in working with these entities in addressing youth gang problems in a balanced approach.

- Gangs are typically defined as groups of 3 or more people who share an identity and engage in ongoing criminal activity. Gang members are often between 12-24 years old.
- Gangs are more prevalent in schools located in urban cities with populations from 100,000 to 1 million people, but gang problems affect communities of all sizes. Youth join gangs when family and school environments have failed them.
- Gang membership is usually short-term, with half to two-thirds of members only staying for a year or less. The race/ethnicity of gang members reflects the surrounding community.

Most sexual offenses are committed by strangers.
Most sexual offenses are committed by someone known to the victim or victim’s family, regardless if the victim is a child or an adult.
Approximately 60% of boys and 80% of girls who are sexually victimized are abused by someone known to the child or the child’s family.
From 2005 to 2010, 78% of sexual violence involved an offender who was a family member, intimate partner, friend, or acquaintance.

1) The study aimed to examine how adverse social conditions can lead to the development of social schemas that increase the likelihood of criminal behavior. It tested a model linking parenting, community disadvantages, and discrimination to the formation of three social schemas: a hostile view of relationships, concern for immediate gratification, and a cynical view of social norms.
2) The results found the three schemas were interrelated but did not conclusively demonstrate that they formed a "criminogenic knowledge structure" that predicted criminal acts. However, the social factors did influence schema formation in expected ways.

What do we_know_about_sexual_abuse
Very few of us know that 73% of the rape victims know the rapists. Moreover, 40% of rapes happen at victim’s home and 20% occur in the homes of familiar people.
It turned out that most of us have no idea about the effective precautions needed to protect ourselves from the traumatic experience, because we expect danger from a wrong source. A widespread belief is that one should expect a rapist to sit in the bushes in the park late at night, while the reality is different.
My colleague Paulina Grzelak and I were astonished while exploring this topic, as we were quite oblivious to the real situation as well. Therefore, we decided to make a small questionnaire and ask people what they think about rape.
This presentation begins with the analysis of what makes a person become a rapist, which is followed by the comparison of the results of the questionnaire with real data.
I would be grateful if you shared this presentation as many people need this knowledge.
I also want to add that most figures we present come from the States where definition of rape and social situation may differ from ours. Hence, comparing data from the U.S. with opinions from Poland and Ukraine may seem improper. For instance, being forced into sexual contact by husband may not even be recognized as rape in Ukraine, “because it’s his natural right”. And even if a wife admits this fact, social welfare system (which does not exist here, let’s face it) leaves her no option apart from remaining silent, while in the U.S. rape victims are less dependent on family members. Therefore, one has to approach the statistics carefully. Still, we believe that using American data can be justified by the fact that they explore the subject more than any other country.

The picture on the left shows the latest developments in a long-term problem of sexual assault on college campuses. In June, Candice Johnson, OCR Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights issued a memo that effectively stalled investigation of civil rights violations including sexual assault on campuses. A month later, Democratic Senators Kirsten Gillibrand from New York State and Claire McCaskill from Missouri urged Secretary of Education Betsy Devos to reverse this decision as unlawful because of failure to protect students under Title IX. Similar problem with widespread sexual assault, and especially against minors, is a long-term problem at cruise ships. Because of the nature of cruise ships, there is no immediate response by law enforcement and the ship guards that investigate the matter are the cruise company’s employees therefore often unlikely to be of meaningful help to the victims. Jurisdiction can be federal, state or foreign, depending on the ship’s flag.
Finally, sexual violence in a workplace can be difficult to address because of the unequal relationship between parties and under-reporting. Recently, car company Tesla appeared in the news as a hostile workplace to women.

Runaway is a status offense for which there is concern that youths, particularly girls, are
vulnerable to the “evils of the streets.” Prior research suggests that many personal and family
risks of runaway are gendered, that the streets may be meaner, and that the strategies for
survival disproportionately serve to criminalize girls. Moreover, patriarchial values may make
the juvenile justice response to runaway girls overly harsh “for their own good.”
Unfortunately, research has been hampered by small or biased samples. This study examines
many risk factors to discern patterns and gender differences among runaway youths for whom
there is a status offense charged. Many charged runaway youths are followed to determine the
nature of official responses and whether responses appear gendered. The findings have
implications for changes in how officials respond to runaway youths, both in terms of what
will better serve the youths’ best interests and for improving public safety.

The dearth of knowledge about who the girls are who get referred to juvenile court andhow best to respond to girls in juvenile justice is the result of attention focused almost
exclusively at the consistently more prevalent male offender population. This situation,
described variously as the “tyranny of small numbers” or “persistent invisibility of girls”
(Acoca, 1998, p. 562), was finally recognized as problematic in the late 1990s as females
became the fastest growing segment of most juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. It
is impossible to disentangle whether the rise in female offenders reflects changing social
and cultural norms and behaviors among the female population or among parents, police,
and court officials, but that females now have the attention of researchers and administra-
tors is without dispute.
One recurrent issue that arises in the literature that does exist on females and juvenile
justice is the perception of their vulnerability, for which they are often viewed as requiring
greater protection than their male counterparts. From the beginning, the designation of a
special category of status offenses eligible only to youths because of their age has been a
