Three middle school girls in Colmar Manor held a bake sale to raise funds for a speed bump on their street. They raised over $200 which will allow the installation of a portable rubber speed bump. The girls were concerned about safety after witnessing cars speeding near where they play. The bake sale brought awareness to safety issues in the community and showed the girls taking initiative to address their concerns.

Three Colmar Manor middle-schoolers are using treats to
make their town safer.
AshleySydney, 13; AmyPalma, 9; and LillyPanameno, 10,
hosted a bake sale from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturdayat Mayor’s Park
in Colmar Manor.
About 50 people attended, including Town Councilwomen
Doreatha Epps (Ward 4) and Vivian Jackson (Ward 3) and
Mayor Sadara Barrow, said Maria Keyser, bake sale
coordinator. The Colmar Manor Police Department took part
in the event, registering bicycles for at least 20 children and
talking about safety.
The fundraiser, proposed about a month ago bythe three
girls and their parents, looked to raise about $150 for one
speed bump installation on Monroe Street, Keyser said.
Keyser said the bake sale brought more than $200, which
will allow for a portable rubber speed bump.
Panameno said the bake sale was prompted after an
incident that occurred while she and her friends were playing
outside.
“We were riding on the road and a car was driving reallyfast,
and theybeeped at us,” Panameno said. “These cars drive
like 100 miles per hour, and kids drive on the roads with
bikes. We don’t want to die on the road.”
Keyser said she became involved with the bake sale after
witnessing the incident. The girls also use Keyser’s
drivewayas a bicycle ramp, making her feel responsible
for their safety, she said. Keyser said the children involved
are adamant about their safety.
“Theyreallyare setting an example for other children,”
Keyser said. “It’s impressive how these children are
taking a hold of this to the extent theycan.”
The girls presented the fundraiser idea to Barrow, made posters, created a menu of treats and handled funds during
the sale. Saturday’s treats included cupcakes, Rice Krispies treats and cookies, Keyser said.
Epps said the fundraiser draws awareness to important safetyconcerns in the community.
“I’ve been [in Colmar Manor] for almost 20 years, and there’s more children in the neighborhood,” Epps said. “I think
