Our team worked with teenagers aged 13-17 at the New Community After School program to discuss important health and social issues. For me, the internet is a great way to allow educators in the humanities to build classes around outcome-based projects rather than around exams or other assignments. In this presentation I'm going to discuss a graduate modules I taught at NUS in SEM 1 of AY2012-13, SE5213. The module's subject was revolt and revolution in Southeast Asia. All work except for the final exam was web-based. The first half of the modules saw students write book reviews they then uploaded to Google Books and Goodreads. In the second half of the module, students created Wikipedia entries on topics of their choice. Wikipedia-based projects, I will argue, represent an exciting opportunity to create humanities modules that allow students to engage in the public and genuinely useful production of knowledge. In my presentation, I'll touch on aspects of module design, discuss how the module worked in practice, highlight some of the more exciting outcomes of the classes, and invite discussion of ways to improve the modules and apply the ideas to other contexts.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Manadoob Program for Self-Esteem at Fort Riley • The Manadoob Program for Self-Esteem ran a pilot which reached 150 children at the Fort Riley Military Base in Kansas. • Training and support was provided for 20 staff members • Eight individual classes were conducted combining various age groups

Juanita Smalls School Age Center Fort Riley “When I first started reviewing the Manadoob material I was very hesitant about exposing the children within my program to the information contained on its well printed pages. My hesitance was derived from the use of mystical stones, awkward looking creatures, and heavy content. But after I started implementing the program I actually liked it and gained a better overall understanding of its concepts. As the facilitator expressed to the caregivers during our initial over the phone training session, ‘You have to make Manadoob your own’ and in doing so I was able to experience good results. Because of techniques taught in this program a child that I knew who suffered from extreme shyness is now able to express himself in a positive manner. He needed to believe in himself, that people wanted to hear what he had to say, and he was valuable. I honestly believe due to the positive interactions during our group sessions he was able to overcome being extremely shy. He was always the first one in my classroom when we met for group time. He was eager to discuss any topic. The children in my group were very interactive and showed no signs of fear or distress with discussion topics listed in the Manadoob textbook. I like this program so much I’ve talked about it with a close friend of mine who directs a BCGA program in Kentucky. I conveyed to him it would be a nice addition to implement Manadoob in his summer program.”
