The Charles Johnson Memorial Hospital was carefully identified and chosen by the Executive Director of Malamulele Onward Dr. Gillian Saloojee in 2012. Several visits were conducted to the hospital in order to determine if the hospital met the necessary criteria to qualify as a Malamulele Onward site. The hospital was seen to be a very good site because it is a government hospital in a poor rural area, there are a large number of children with Cerebral Palsy attending the monthly Cerebral Palsy clinic and there seemed to be a supportive management team. Malamulele Onward decided to take on the challenge of conducting an intervention for 91 children with Cerebral Palsy at the hospital in two weeks. Strategic Goals for the intervention: 1. Identifying and reaching children with cerebral palsy living in remote rural areas 2. Supporting and empowering those involved in the rehabilitation and care of children with Cerebral Palsy. This includes the children’s families as the rehabilitation staff responsible for providing services to the children 3. Improving the quality of life of children with Cerebral Palsy by meeting their physical and emotional needs. By facilitating workshops that provide information and insight into the condition of Cerebral Palsy and ways carers can support each other and their children.
