2. What should be measured?
TQM companies record
measures which show what is
actually happening in the
business. These measures help
companies predict changes
Things to be
measured
Productivity
Financial
performance
Production
quality
Customer
satisfaction
Staff attitudes
Health, safety
and environment
3. Taking measurements
Measuring the company’s processes is often called
STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL “SPC”.
To adopt SPC, you:
Collect data for your main processes
Analyze the numbers
Make decisions based on what you find
4. Control charts
The control chart is the most commonly used
tool in SPC. It is produced by taking
measurements at random, from as little as 5
percent of the total production.
This kind of charts show trends and help staff to
take corrective action before the product goes
outside the specification.
7. Cause and effect analysis
A cause and effect chart is also known as a fishbone chart.
8. Benchmarking asks: How do we are performing against our competitors.
Some firms benchmark their performance against historical performance.
The best is to compare the firm against the best firms in the world.
9. Measure the cost of
poor quality
The cost include
internal failure,
external failure and
other hidden cost.
10. Brainstorm solutions
Most of the techniques discussed so far
have been statistical. But any
organization also needs creative thought
and new ideas.
In a brainstorming session, everyone in
the group is encouraged to put forward
ideas. All the ideas are written on large
sheets of paper which are stuck on the
walls. After the target has been reached,
the ideas can be examined and the best
ones used.
