The responsibilities and requirements of business leaders
have grown both in scope as well as complexity. Flexibility
is the order of the day in so many ways. Succeeding in the
global, always-on marketplace calls for agility like our
predecessors could not have imagined. It means we need
to ensure that our teams are always accessible and ready
to react almost instantaneously.
If our customers are to remain loyal, all of this needs to be
delivered with a caring smile and genuine tone, regardless
of the time of day (or night). Consider the fierceness with
which we all compete for talented employees who can
work effectively under such conditions, and the high
expectations they hold for their working situations. Then
understand why the word ‘flexibility’ can make many
business leaders quake in their boots.
Implementing flexible mobile solutions remains a priority for
CIOs and senior IT leaders in the next 12 – 24 months,
according to a Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2013 survey.
According to Xcube Labs up to 67% of CIOs and IT
professionals believe that mobility will impact their businesses
as much as, or more than, the internet did in the 1990s.
Tackling enterprise mobility in the right way can deliver
competitive advantage and increased profit margins by
helping your teams to work smarter and harder. This shift in
working practises requires a long-term perspective however,
and some careful strategising. Making enterprise mobility a
success is an important yet challenging task and should be
approached with careful consideration. Within this guide you

enterprise mobility plans successful.

As a starting point, consider your users first.
Analyse and profile your workforce to
understand their roles, and how enterprise
mobility might enable them to work faster and
smarter, from anywhere, and at any time. It’s
also important to remember that the
technology you give to teams needs to form
part of a wider tech strategy, which in turn
must support your overall business plan.
Rather than looking at employees by department, you
may decide to segment them according to their mobility
requirements: how they work and why they work in this
way. Investigate business processes, data, devices,
locations, security challenges and the potential benefits
to your organisation before making any decisions.
Remember, with the roll out of 4G, UK businesses can
now take advantage of faster connection speeds than
ever before. This makes flexible working from a mobile
device a real possibility, and eliminates the need to
head back to the office simply to catch up on
correspondence or tie up loose ends.

Once you have segmented your employees by
requirements it might be time to consider activity
oriented apps. According to Gartner, the number of
mobile CRM apps will grow by 500% by the end of 2014.
By utilising one single business-enabling app you could
be solving the challenges of hundreds of employees
across the enterprise in one single swoop.
Think about apps to collaborate with colleagues, share
knowledge, and in short, ‘get the job done’ when on the
move. From very low-cost Android apps to bespoke
suites of programmes that match your office tech, the
options are endless. There will be an effective solution
for every employee in every business.
3. The Devices
Users are becoming more tech-savvy by the day so
don’t under-estimate them. They will be motivated by
great tech and disheartened with clunky kit. Think
about feature rich devices. Consider technology with
touch-screens, cameras, GPS, scanners – even
wearable devices that will enable and encourage your
workforce. In turn this will provide greater collaboration
and improved communication which can only be a
positive for productivity and customer service. By using
the right devices and apps, and accessing your
programmes, documents and information via the cloud,
your teams will work independently and confidently.
They will also demand less support or resource while
on the move.
IT teams will therefore naturally become less device-
focused and instead, adopt a more technology
enabling stance, providing important guidance, usage
policies and security.

Once you have the right systems in place, it
is vital that you provide solid management
and usage policies that guide and smooth the
application of these new technologies. These
policies need to not only set the ground rules
as to how devices and apps should be used
and by whom. They should also facilitate
routine maintenance, ensuring that
technology remains up-to-date, in efficient
working order and – most of all – compliant
with ever-changing regulations.
5. The Working Rights
There are of course, legalities and guidelines that
must be adhered to: yet another area of compliance
for senior leaders to be challenged with. These are
always subject to change of course, as modern
working practises advance even further.
It is already the case that parents of children aged 16
or under, or of disabled children under the age of 18,
have the right to ask their employer for a more
flexible working arrangement. The employer is
obliged to reasonably consider all requests. However,
from April 2014 the right to request to work flexibly
will be granted to all employees who have been with
their employer for 26 weeks or more.
This change in legislation could have a
dramatic effect on working patterns in the
UK. It is expected that many employees will
ask to work flexibly alongside studying for
further qualifications, helping to care for
grandchildren, or spending time on other
activities outside the workplace.

The thought that your team members could all soon
start asking for flexible working arrangements may
seem daunting – but it’s worth keeping an open mind.
Recent research by Regus found that 70% of managers
reported an increase in productivity after a shift to
flexible working. And a 2012 study by Ipsos MORI found
that employees tend to overcompensate when working
away from the office, with 47% saying they try to be
“extra visible” by sending more emails and making more
calls. A further 39% said that they worked longer hours,
just to prove they’re not slacking off!
If you hope to increase your business’ agility this year,
remember to take the points we have discussed into
consideration. Understand your employees’ roles and how
mobility could aid them. Assess and procure the right apps
and technology to fit their needs. Know your staff rights
and how you will meet them. And ensure you have
guidance policies in place that keep everything – and
everybody – working smoothly. Stick to this plan and you
will boost so much more than just agility; productivity,
morale and even turnover will all see a lift.

Remember, your enterprise mobility strategy should not be
a standalone project. Ensure that your actions support your
overall business plan. Enterprise mobility is just one pillar
for creating company-wide success and growth. It should
encompass many elements from apps to devices to
policies and more. Implemented half-heartedly and without
strategy, and the benefits will be scarce, possibly
detrimental. Done well and you will see the benefits unfold
right across your organisation.

technology plans. Devices are sure to go end-of-life regularly so
research future tech and understand what’s next on the horizon.

Tackling enterprise mobility in the right way can deliver competitive advantage and increased profit margins by helping your teams to work smarter and harder. This shift in working practises requires a long-term perspective however, and some careful strategising. Think about apps to collaborate with colleagues, share knowledge, and in short, ‘get the job done’ when on the move. In turn this will provide greater collaboration and improved communication which can only be a positive for productivity and customer service.   • 9. 5. The Working Rights There are of course, legalities and guidelines that must be adhered to: yet another area of compliance for senior leaders to be challenged with. These are always subject to change of course, as modern working practises advance even further. It is already the case that parents of children aged 16 or under, or of disabled children under the age of 18, have the right to ask their employer for a more flexible working arrangement. The employer is obliged to reasonably consider all requests. However, from April 2014 the right to request to work flexibly will be granted to all employees who have been with their employer for 26 weeks or more.
  • 10. This change in legislation could have a dramatic effect on working patterns in the UK. It is expected that many employees will ask to work flexibly alongside studying for further qualifications, helping to care for grandchildren, or spending time on other activities outside the workplace. 5. Your enterprise mobility plan: Where it all fits The thought that your team members could all soon start asking for flexible working arrangements may seem daunting – but it’s worth keeping an open mind. Recent research by Regus found that 70% of managers reported an increase in productivity after a shift to flexible working. And a 2012 study by Ipsos MORI found that employees tend to overcompensate when working away from the office, with 47% saying they try to be “extra visible” by sending more emails and making more calls. A further 39% said that they worked longer hours, just to prove they’re not slacking off!
