3. PERCEPTION = REALITY
“Cycling is dangerous” “I’m too out of shape”
“I don’t have the time” “You can’t carry much on a bike”
“I hate getting wet & cold” “I’m not wearing lycra; anyway I
need to wear a suit”
“I’ll get all sweaty & smelly; I’ll need
a shower” “I travel long distances; too far to
cycle”
“It costs the earth to buy a bike”
“Bikes don’t have air-con, I don’t
“It will ruin my sex life” want to breathe in car fumes”
“I’ve never done it; I’m too “I’ve got kids to drop off at school; I
frightened to try” need my SUV”
England’s true cycling country:
Gentle terrain, quiet roads, balmy weather, stunning inland and coastal scenery, wealth of history, art and architecture, great food, friendly people.
Yet many people find cycling resistible:
In 1971, 4.4% of all journeys in the UK were made by bicycle.
Now only just over 1%,
Represents a massive decline since the 1930’s the golden era of cycling.
Evidence of this statistic Suffolk Coastal:
Staff survey 2008 linked to travel plan showed 3/355 staff cycle to work regularly = 1%.
Maybe the strategic plans for a bike pool might encourage more staff to swap their 4 wheels for 2?
Not for lack of initiatives and promotion:
Baby steps - not meant in a derogatory way.
Some great projects such as Darlington’s Beauty and the Bike showed teenage girls how fashion and cycling can ride in tandem.
Media have a part to play. Discuss sport relief, Mark Beaumont and lack of coverage for Beauty and Beast.
Little wonder that resistance is more a matter of perception
People cite all sorts of reasons or excuses.

Like me, You’ve probably heard them all and more besides
And like me, you can probably offer a solution.
We’re the converts;
Use handout AND DISCUSS
But if we want to make a long lasting impact to bring walking and cycling to our great public places, we need to go beyond the baby steps.
Here’s my vision.
SHOW SLIDE
It takes the remaining ingredients of
existing infrastructure,
resources and
political will
to bring about radical change
It’s nothing new.
It’s done in hundreds of countries across the globe including Bogota!
We do it for Skyrides, once a year, so why not every week?
IMAGINE IT.
Invite to take chocolate and perhaps reflect on how the chocolate relates to cycling -
aroma
sensual
smooth
rich
