A2 G324: Advanced Portfolio
The Brief 2013: Production of the Main text

The main text accompanies the 2 ancillaries and will be produced in groups during this latter
part of the A2 year. The main text is worth 40 marks; this contributes directly to your final
coursework score and is added to the ancillary text 1 and 2 marks (20 marks).

CROSS MEDIA HORROR FILM PROMOTION PACKAGE:

Main
Produce a teaser trailer to promote the release of your fictitious horror film of 60-90 seconds in
length and to include music/voice over/sound effects and titles. Music use must be copyright-
free or own composition unless you have written permission from the record company. This
has been specified by the examination board.

The teaser should use or manipulate established horror conventions and include evidence of
deliberate construction of mise-en scene and cinematography e.g. jump cutting, montage etc.
You must carefully consider casting and appropriate locations/costumes and props. The teaser
should use only original images and promote the genre/narrative and stars of your film.
Content should be suitable for audiences with a C15 rating.

MUSIC VIDEO:

Main
Produce a music promo to the song or piece of music you promoted on the digipack/website of
3.5 to 5 minutes in length. Music must be copyright-free unless you have written permission
from the record company. This has been specified by the examination board.

The promo should express the mood, feel, atmosphere, meaning (as appropriate) of the song as
powerfully as possible (include evidence of deliberate construction of mise-en scene and
manipulation of conventions e.g. jump cutting, lip synching etc.) You must carefully consider
casting and appropriate locations/costumes and props. The promo should be suitable for
exhibition before the 9pm watershed and use only original images.

Practical Marks in both options are awarded for;
   • holding a shot steady, where appropriate;
   • framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate;
   • using a variety of shot distances as appropriate;
   • shooting material appropriate to the task set;
   • selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting;
   • editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer;
   • using varied shot transitions, captions and other effects selectively and appropriately;
   • using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task.

NB in addition all candidates will submit an individual Main Task Multi-Media Blog to outline
research/planning and an Evaluation Blog of the finished portfolio.

ASSESSMENT
All students will also be assessed on their ability to work effectively as part of a team and to
strict deadlines.
