Mahashivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honor of Lord Shiva. It falls on the 14th day of the Hindu month of Phalguna or Maagh. Devotees observe a strict fast and offer prayers to Lord Shiva throughout the day and night, believing it purifies the body and soul. Temples are decorated and special pujas are performed, with chanting of prayers to Lord Shiva. Mahashivratri celebrates the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and is considered the most auspicious day to worship Shiva.
