About the Maha Shivaratri Festival
Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu festival that commemorates God Shiva. It is also known as “The Night of
Shiva” and is observed in most Indian states. Maha Shivaratri is a cherished Hindu festival with
significant spiritual significance, representing victory over darkness and life’s challenges through fasting
and meditation. This auspicious event brings Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti’s heavenly energies
together. It is considered that the spiritual energies of the Universe are especially strong today. Maha
Shivaratri is observed via fasting, meditation on Lord Shiva, introspection, social peace promotion, and
vigils at Shiva temples. Unlike most Hindu celebrations, Shivaratri is observed at night.

3. There are multiple legends surrounding Maha Shivaratri, and its significance is discussed in various
Puranas, including the Linga Purana. A tremendous and holy depiction of creation and destruction.
Devotees shout Shiva chants and recite texts, metaphorically joining in the almighty’s cosmic dance
and celebrating his omnipresence. Another mythology says that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
married on this day. This characteristic makes the holiday especially important for married couples and
unmarried ladies looking for a suitable husband.
The Maha Shivaratri Puja begins early in the morning, with devotees taking a bath before daylight,
changing into new clothes, and making their journey to Shiva temples. This day is especially important
for ladies who participate in the traditional Maha Shivaratri Puja, which includes water, milk, Bel leaves,
and fruits such as Ber or jujube fruit, as well as the use of incense sticks. They circumambulate the Shiva
Lingam three or seven times, followed by a ritual pouring of milk and offerings of leaves, fruits, and
flowers, all while praying with incense sticks.
The Maha Shivaratri Puja includes Four significant elements, each
representing a distinct meaning:
The application of vermilion after a bath represents virtue.
1. The presenting of fruits during worship symbolizes the fulfillment of desires and longevity.
2. The burning of incense sticks is symbolic of riches.
3. Betel leaves represent contentment obtained from worldly wants.
4. The lighting of lights represents the attainment of wisdom and knowledge.
One of the most important aspects of this celebration is the night-long vigil at Shiva temples, which
leads to the organization of Jaagrans by devotees. As a result, on the night of Maha Shivaratri, temples
are filled with chanting of ‘Om Namah Shivay,’ and men and women sing devotional hymns to Lord
Shiva.

4. Maha Shivratri
Maha Shivaratri is steeped in tales, one of the most well-known being the narrative of Goddess
Parvati’s difficult penance to secure Lord Shiva as her husband. According to mythology, Lord Shiva and
Goddess Parvati married on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Falgun, thanks to
her undying devotion. This is the underlying cause of Maha Shivratri tremendous prominence and
auspiciousness. The auspicious occasion is observed in various ways across cultures and places. In Tamil
Nadu, the day is honored at the Annamalai temple. Lord Shiva devotees take a 14-kilometer barefoot
walk, known as Girivalam or Giri Pradakshina, around Shiva’s shrine on the hilltop.
The town of Mandi conducts the Mandi fair, which attracts devotees from all around India. On this day,
around 200 Hindu Gods and Goddesses are said to gather in Mandi.
Unmarried women in West Bengal flock to Tarakeswar, a holy location, to pray for the ideal husband.
Women devotees bathe the Shivalinga with milk and pray for the health of their sons and spouses.
According to Hindu legend, Parvati, Shiva’s wife, prayed on this day to fend off any evil that could befall
her husband. Since then, Maha Shivaratri has been regarded an auspicious day for women.
Early in the morning, devotees bathe in the Ganges or another sacred source of water. Purification
rituals such as worshipping the sun, Shiva, and Vishnu are practiced. After taking a bath, devotees dress
cleanly and carry pots of water to the temple to pour on the Shivalinga.
