Philippians 1:12-14 Magnifying Christ. John said Jesus must increase and he must decrease. Christians should be magnifying Christ and diminishing themselves. We do this by defending the gospel, preaching Christ, trusting Christ, living without shame, living for Christ, producing fruit, desiring to be with Him, Putting others needs first, fellowshipping fellow christians, working together with other christians.

1. LIVING A LIFE THAT

2. Philippians 1:12-14 But I want you to
know, brethren, that the things which
happened to me have actually turned
out for the furtherance of the gospel,
13 so that it has become evident to
the whole palace guard, and to all the
rest, that my chains are in Christ;
14 and most of the brethren in the
Lord, having become confident by
my chains, are much more bold to
speak the word without fear.

3. MAGNIFYING CHRIST
A. Paul has been imprisoned for his faith in
Jesus.
B. But he sees it as a good thing (All things
work together for good) because the
gospel had been spread to the palace
guard and brethren have been
emboldened to speak the word of God.
C. Paul’s desire was to magnify Christ
whether by life or by death (1:20).
D. We see in verses 15-30 the things Paul
says will accomplish magnifying Christ.

4. 1. I am set for the defense of the
gospel
• Philippians 1:15-17 Some indeed preach
Christ even from envy and strife, and some
also from good will: 16 The former preach
Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely,
supposing to add affliction to my chains;
17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am
appointed for the defense of the gospel.
• 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in
your hearts, and always be ready to give a
defense to everyone who asks you a reason
for the hope that is in you, with meekness and
fear;

5. 2. I rejoice with the preaching of
Christ
• Philippians 1:18 What then? Only that
in every way, whether in pretense or in
truth, Christ is preached; and in this I
rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.
• Luke 9:49-50 Now John answered and
said, “Master, we saw someone casting
out demons in Your name, and we
forbade him because he does not
follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to
him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is
not against us is on our side.”

6. 3. I trust in Christ
• Philippians 1:19 For I know that this will
turn out for my deliverance through your
prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus
Christ,
• Romans 8:31-32 What then shall we say to
these things? If God is for us, who can be
against us? 32 He who did not spare His
own Son, but delivered Him up for us all,
how shall He not with Him also freely give
us all things?

7. 4. I strive to live a life without shame
• Philippians 1:20 according to my earnest
expectation and hope that in nothing I shall
be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always,
so now also Christ will be magnified in my
body, whether by life or by death.
• Romans 6:20-22 For when you were slaves of
sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
21 What fruit did you have then in the things
of which you are now ashamed? For the end
of those things is death. 22 But now having
been set free from sin, and having become
slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness,
and the end, everlasting life.

8. 5. I live for Christ and gain in death
• Philippians 1:21 For to me, to live is
Christ, and to die is gain.
• Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified
with Christ; it is no longer I who live,
but Christ lives in me; and the life
which I now live in the flesh I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me
and gave Himself for me.

9. 6. I make choices that produce fruit.
• Philippians 1:22 But if I live on in the
flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor;
yet what I shall choose I cannot tell.
• Romans 6:22 But now having been set
free from sin, and having become
slaves of God, you have your fruit to
holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

10. 7. I have a strong desire to be with
Christ
• Philippians 1:23 For I am hard pressed
between the two, having a desire to depart
and be with Christ, which is far better.
• 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 So we are always
confident, knowing that while we are at
home in the body we are absent from the
Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather
to be absent from the body and to be
present with the Lord.

11. 8. I put others needs above my own
• Philippians 1:24) Nevertheless to
remain in the flesh is more needful for
you.
• Philippians 2:3-4 Let nothing be done
through selfish ambition or conceit, but
in lowliness of mind let each esteem
others better than himself. 4 Let each of
you look out not only for his own
interests, but also for the interests of
others.

12. 9. I rejoice in faith
• Philippians 1:25 And being confident
of this, I know that I shall remain and
continue with you all for your progress
and joy of faith,
• 2 Corinthians 1:24 Not that we have
dominion over your faith, but are fellow
workers for your joy; for by faith you
stand.

13. 10. I long for fellowship with fellow
Christians
• Philippians 1:26 that your rejoicing for
me may be more abundant in Jesus
Christ by my coming to you again.
• Philippians 4:1 Therefore, my beloved
and longed-for brethren, my joy and
crown, so stand fast in the Lord,
beloved.

14. 11. I will work together with other
Christians for the faith of the gospel
• Philippians 1:27 Only let your conduct be worthy
of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and
see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs,
that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind
striving together for the faith of the gospel,
• Jude 1:20-23 But you, beloved, building
yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in
the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of
God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus
Christ unto eternal life. 22 And on some have
compassion, making a distinction; 23 but others
save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating
even the garment defiled by the flesh.

15. 12. I will not fear those opposed to
me
• Philippians 1:28 and not in any way
terrified by your adversaries, which is
to them a proof of perdition, but to you
of salvation, and that from God.
• Hebrews 13:6 So we may boldly say:
"The LORD is my helper; I will not fear.
What can man do to me?"

16. 13. I will suffer for Christ
• Philippians 1:29-30 For to you it has
been granted on behalf of Christ, not
only to believe in Him, but also to suffer
for His sake, 30 having the same
conflict which you saw in me and now
hear is in me.
• 2 Timothy 3:12 Yes, and all who desire
to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer
persecution.
