2. INTRODUCTION
MAGAZINE MAKING
In this google slides im going to exhibit all the
steps I did in the part of research to have enough
knowledge to make a magazine.
MAGAZINE DEVELOPMENT
Then further on I'm going to present all the
steps of the making of a magazine. From the
the front cover to the double spread sheet with
the article on it.
2
3. HELLO!
I am Santiago Domenech
I'm here to present my tech
magazine called “Tech Tips”,
but first my research.
3
5. “Fist of all I want to point out that
from the start I wanted to produce a
tech magazine, so most of my initial
research is towards that kind of
house stile.
5
6. Conventions
From the beginning I wanted to make a magazine that had as
target audience, people interested in economica, tech, along
those lines. Making the magazine a bit formal.
That's why I analysed one of the most popular economics
magazines, “Forbes”. From these kind of magazines I could
point out some of the main parts and style they used to lure
different audiences.
I looked at all kinds of magazines to look at differences on the
style to eventually make my magazine in a certain way and not
mix styles that don't appeal to my specific target audience.
From this magazine, I liked the border and the lack of text,
compared to other magazines for young people, that are very
colorful and have a lot of text.
6
7. Analysis
In this moment in time I had some experience with magazines
and how they looked, but I still didn't understand why some
things are put on the front cover of magazines.
In this part I studied a lot of magazine terminology, and basic
rules to make a proper magazine cover that would at least in
some way lure the target audience to whom it's directed to
eventually buy that magazine.
7
11. Intro
This was my first try at making a magazine, from
my limited knowledge about magazines I
decided to make a magazine, and using my
knowledge acquired along my research period to
compare it to a professional magazine and have
an idea of how a magazine is supposed to look
like.
Rough ideas about magazines
Good / Bad
Some Observations:
First of all the image is too small compared to
the full extent of the page. This leads to losing
the buyers attention, as nothing about the front
cover is enticing them to buy it. Also some of the
colours blend in too much so in some ways they
look weird.
11
13. TECH MAGAZINE
As I said before from
the beginning I wanted
to produce a tech
magazine, so I didn't
ask an audience for an
opinion about which
magazine topic they
would prefer
In the world there are
many magazines that
are not just for anyone
they are more specific,
targeting an audience
that maybe it's not most
of the world's
population but they
make it anyways.
I used that king of
thinking to make my
magazine as even
though it were i live no
one is interested in
tech, I would find a
place where my target
audience is and release
the magazine.
13
14. Demographics
From looking online, I got a look at my target audience. Finding
our data about demographics and psychographics to then make
some sort of questionnaire that people could fill up that are in
my target audience to give me a more concrete idea as in what
to do.
From this i found that the magazine should be ether in English,
Chinese or Japanese, and of course as I only know English i did
it on this language as most people that are focused on
technology and economics are found in places that speak these
languages and also English is the primal language in which
scientist communicate between countries.
14
15. Questionnaire
In this part I made a questionnaire to know that my ideas that I
have further into making, represent my target audience and not
deviate from the purpose of this magazine.
In this questionnaire I found out that mostly teen agers are
interested in tech as its their era, compared to older people that
never experienced it like nowadays everyone does. From this I
concluded that it was going to be directed towards teen agers
and older people that are in the range of 25 to 50 years old that
are in the working area and specialize in deeper concepts of
technology.
15
17. Masthead
In this part of pre production I investigated other magazines that
looked similar to something I would want to produce.
From these I took some of them apart to analyse all their
conventions, meaning, sell linea and anything that characterize
their house style to then adapt some of that knowledge to my
magazine.
17
18. Over all
Most of my pre production was very simple as most of my
research from the beginning was toward making a tech
magazine.
In this section of pre production I did things like, a sketch of
how I would like my magazine to look, and also I experimented
a lot with a DSLR camera to investigate shadows, positioning,
camera angles, etc. So I could say that I learned how to take
photographs, in different ways, as sometimes the photographer
whats the photo to have a lot of light of ve a bit dull, it depends
on the house style.
18
20. Photographs
The first thing of my production, was taking some photographs.
The photographs didn't need to be that interesting or
professional, they only needed to have some hints that would
lure a person that is in the target audience into reading it.
The hints were the processor and the packman on the hoodie, as
I said it's not a lot, but by using a model that works as filler
makes it more interesting that using a blank background and
putting a simple processor or object in the middle and snapping
the picture, as some of the tech magazines do.
These pictures were taken with a Sony DSLR rebel 3, that have
a better dynamic range and image quality than something like a
cellphone.
20
21. Failed Photoshop
I intended to make something interesting with the background
and the picture but it didn't quite work.
It was a total challenge that I didn't had the skills to complete.
This was a failure, but I learned a lot of thing on Photoshop, like
the use of new tools like the pen, patch or even things like
rasterize a image to work on it.
It didn't look that bad from a distance but it didn't look
professional, and eliminating all the spaces though the hair to
color the background was too hard for me, so I moved on.
21
22. Photoshop
After getting the picture I did a lot of photoshop on the
photograph, to add the texts and fixe some things on the image.
I wanted do the less photoshop possible on the image so it is
more real and represents the social group that I wanted to target,
as they mostly don't focus on a lot of makeup or dressing, so I
only lifted the contrast on the lips and fixed the background
from imperfections.
Also I added some other things that made the image more
interesting. Also in my case the use of photoshop on these kind
of things are not perceived as a wrong thing to do as people that
are interested in technologie, would concentrate more in the
content that in the photograph.
22
23. OVER ALL
In this part I made a questionnaire to know that my ideas that I
have further into making, represent my target audience and not
deviate from the purpose of this magazine.
In this questionnaire I found out that mostly teen agers are
interested in tech as its their era, compared to older people that
never experienced it like nowadays everyone does. From this I
concluded that it was going to be directed towards teen agers
and older people that are in the range of 25 to 50 years old that
are in the working area and specialize in deeper concepts of
technology.
23
27. Front cover
This front cover uses some conventions of any tech magazine,
just like the simplistic look, the “techy” colour pallet, the font
and the pictures that if anyone see them they won't be surprised
or interested, but people that know what they mean or are will
get interested. This representing this part of the market as
formal, and knowledgeable.
As a more informative type of writing people would engage
with it in a neutral way as in the texts there aren't many opinions
to go against any beleaf.
Throwout tss proyect I used Photoshop and a DSLR camera to
create my product and learned a lot, from knowing how a
magazine is made to actually making one in photoshop and hit
many walls but eventually learning how to use it.
27
30. Contents page
30
The contents page is very simple and break some of the
conventions of a tach magazine contents page, as most of them
use a lot of pictures and small drawings to accompany the text. In
my case I only placed one picture that doesn't resemble a lot of
the tech industry as its very basic and most people understand
what I'm holding on my hand.
But the simplicity makes the audience focus and get interested
with the text and the content that the magazine has, instead of
being attracted by some pictures.
I just pretty much did all in photoshop, adding the squares text,
and I also left the photograph untouched as the dynamic range of
the camera captures some nice contrast and sharpness that in my
opinion didn't need to be altered. With this I also learned how to
make guidelines s that all the text is centered and uniform.
33. Article
In the article the only thing that is noticeable wrong is the text
on the left that is too close to the hair, and that the text might
fade away in the background.
From that on the text itself is very representative of the target
audience, as it was a internet fenomenen that involved many
tech geniuses to get somewhere but not yet complete it, it
involved a lot of coding, puzzle solving, discovering algorithms
on scripts.
Most of the people reading would be people that were involved
to know about this mystery, but it can also be interesant for
other people, because of its mystery and its interesting story.
Also I learned how to make the text curve and adapt to a certain
form on photoshop.
