Dr. Mahmoud Solh, director general of ICARDAs, received the Gregor Mendel Innovation Prize for his team's efforts in preserving plant genetic resources amidst the Syrian civil war by safely transporting unique germplasm collections to the Svalbard Seed Vault. Despite the challenges of political unrest, ICARDA successfully duplicated more than 80% of its unique crop genetic resources, safeguarding them for future agricultural development and food security. The organization has maintained strong relations with local communities and governments, continuing its mission to enhance food security and address climate change impacts.
