Building Character and Trust
"Character is the only secure foundation of the state.“
                                                           Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933

As so eliquently stated by President Calvin Coolidge, building
character is the foundation to a secure state. This holds true to education in
today’s society as well. To create a positive classroom culture, the teacher
must first build trust and character among his/her students. These two key
elements within the classroom atmosphere, set the tempo for creating and
sustaining excellence in the learning environment.
Building Character and Trust
 Three Key Techniques

Precise The technique uses positive reinforcement to build trust between
Praise the teacher and the student; allowing the student to feel pride in
              providing correct answers.

Emotional This technique creates a consistent relationship with the teacher.
Constancy Consistency builds trust which creates an environment of higher
              achievement

This technique is used to reinforce the academics as well as that day’s
Normalize learning objective. It provides a little sparkle to
Error the day and reinforces learning by being on point.
Building Character and Trust
 Precise Praise

 • Creating Classroom Culture
       • Knowing the difference in Precise
           Praise versus Acknowledgement
       • Praise Loud; Fix Soft
             • Praise given for working hard
             • Fosters effort and risk taking
       • Praise the behavior not the trait
             • Praising the behavior focuses on the
action you would like to see
             • Praising the trait has the opposite effect
                    • Proven to take fewer risks
Building Character and Trust Praise invariably
                                                                                                implies a
                                                                                             reference to a
     Compare and Contrast higher standard.
                                                                                           Aristotle (384bc-322bc)

PRECISE PRAISE V/S ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
• Why does this technique work? • Merely the act of expressing
     • Provides verbal recognition for something was done correctly
the students desired outcome • Example
          • Building block of operant • “Yes Mallory, you answered
              conditioning correctly”
                 • Utilizes consequences to
                     increase the desired positive
                     behavior

                                                              An accent, click to
                                                             edit the text inside.
               An accent, click to
              edit the text inside.
Building Character and Trust
 Emotional Constancy
• Building a classroom culture from
    emotional constancy also builds trust
    with your students.

“Success is in the long run about a student’s consistent
relationship with productive behaviors (Lemov, 2010).”
Building Character and Trust
 Emotional Constancy

                       • Modulate your Emotions
                                 • Don’t get worked up
                                 • Use self control and retraint
                                 • Respond Calmly

                       • Tie your emotions to the students performance.
                                 • Use excited and pleasurable words when student
perform to your expectations and above
                                 • Avoid saying your “disappointed” in them
Building Character and Trust
    Normalize Error

• Avoid chastising • Don’t Flatter “Getting it wrong and then
students for wrong getting it wright is one of the
answers • Don’t Fuss fundamental processes for
                                               schooling. (Lemov, 2010)”
• Do not makes excuses
    for students getting
    the incorrect answer
Building Character and Trust
   Normalize Error
Champion teachers have built a classroom culture where students
understand that the teacher expects them to get right and wrong answers.

This technique goes hand in hand with the precise praise technique. This is
because the teacher must be careful to amount of praise so that it isn’t
diluted or overused.

Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome to MAE 5060 Strategies of the 21st Century Classroom. Today we will be discussing building character and trust among our students. Christina Davidson will be your instructor.
  2. Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President of the United Sates, made a poignant quote regarding Character. He stated that it was the only secure foundation of the state. Positive classroom culture fosters that notion of building character and trust in our students today.
  3. There are many techniques that build character and trust among ones student’s. Three of those techniques in Chapter seven for Building Character and trust that I feel outline these building blocks are Precise Praise, Emotional Constancy and Normalizing Errors. This combination of techniques described by Lemov are vital in creating a positive classroom culture. Other techniques discussed in this chapter is “Positive Framing”, “The J-Factor”, “Warm & Strict”, & “Explain Everything”. (Lemov, 2011)
  4. Teachers are able to create a positive classroom culture with Precise Praise. Teachers who are pro’s at this technique are able to distinguish between just plainly acknowledging the student and praising them. When precise praise is used it is not just to acknowledge that a student got the answer correct; however, it is a way that teachers let students know they have went above and beyond.
  5. How do teacher know if they are mistakenly giving acknowledgement versus precise praise? Some of the key indicators are they way that the teacher responds verbally to the student. Examples of Precise Praise would be: “Fantastic work Zuzu!”. Keep in mind that precise praise must also be genuine! Students know if teachers are sincere with their thoughts and
  6. Emotional constancy is one of the key techniques to building and maintaining trust with your students. This type of behavior by the teacher, allows the student to know the teacher is always in control. As emotions rise and fall; teachers need to ensure that they do not allow their tone to rise and plumitt. Not only does teachers need to watch their tone, but the words that they use are just as important.
  7. Teachers how have gotten this technique down will have classrooms that are calm and productive. You will see a teacher who is in control of his/her classroom.
  8. Enabling students to seek the correct answer is what the Normalizing Error Technque is all about. Teaching children that making mistakes is normal and that everyone does it lets them know that they first of all are not alone and also that everyone makes errors. The thing to avoid is when a student gets it wrong. Embarrasing them in front of the class room only makes them timid and shy away from searching any further for the correct answer. Try not to flatter them by saying things like, “that’s ok, everyone makes mistakes”
