Macbeth review
In your groups:discuss the following questions. After each discussion, answer the questions—just key words and
quick notes will suffice. Once your group has discussed/answered all questions, work alone on the following:
Individually:Choose one of the questions to answer fully using the textual evidence graphic organizer to
gather supporting evidence. Then turn your graphic organizer notes into a well-developed paragraph to turn in by
the end of class (for a quiz grade).
1. A tragic hero is defined as a basically good and noble person who fails because of some fault or tragic flaw
in his character. Is Macbeth a tragic hero? If so, what is his tragic flaw? If not, why not? Explain.

2. “Goodness in this world is destined to be defeated.” Do you agree? Explain using examples from the play.

3. Did the events in Macbeth’s life occur because of the witches’ prophesy or because of the choices he made?
Or is it a bit of both? Did Macbeth suffer because of his decisions? Or was he fated to suffer? What caused
Macbeth to fall: fate or free will? Explain.

4. What are the values that make up the idea of “manliness” in the play? What are the values that make up
being a “woman”? How are these ideas of gender roles reversed throughout the play? List examples.
