APPLYING ‘THEORY OF PROCESS’

VOLUME I

IN HOMOEOPATHIC MATERIA MEDICA
FRANS MAAN, MD
2. One framework integrating Jan Scholten’s approach to the periodic table,
Rajan Sankaran’s Kingdom approach and personality psychology in
general. Can it be? The author affirms it can, thanks to the general ‘Theory
of Process’ by Arthur Young. Similarities between seven issues in eighteen
columns, seven issues in seven rows in the periodic table and seven issues
in seven kingdoms are highlighted. Most kingdoms in nature can be
subdivided in seven subgroups, with corresponding descriptions of each
seven.
Many have expressed the wish of a link between homoeopathy and the
‘mainland’ of ‘science’, be it medicine or psychology. This book supplies a
formal one to psychology, but with a strange turn: Frans Maan is very
explicit in using the zodiac and Jungian psychology as a bridge between
them all. Inadvertently, there is even an integration of several psychological
approaches with one another, including ‘horizontal’ trait psychology and
development theories.
An integrative framework should be complex if it is to do justice to
homoeopathy, psychology, to life. At the same time the recurring seven
issues allow the author to tie the seven issues in with homoeopathic
materia medica with an emphasis on one row of the periodic table of
chemical elements only. That row may function as a bridge to all other
sevens. Apart from the complexity it is straightforward in the proposed
patterns and it is surprisingly practical as illustrated by some casehistories,
that are analysed with the framework as interface.
‘Frans Maan offers us an encompassing insight by making
many connections, so that we are enabled to comprehend
better the processes our patients go through.
An absolutely challenging book, crossing many borders.
Inspiring in its broad vision!’
Alize Timmerman
‘This book is the next step towards integration. Now we can
continue with a vision of a unifying model for homeopathy
with other holistic approaches. Thank you, Frans, for your
work and vision!’

5. In the book I propose that there is a pattern in homoeopathic materia medica that
comes down to the pattern fire - water - air - earth - air - water - fire -
(quintessence) - on several hierarchical levels, with different timescales.
The pattern can be detected horizontally and vertically in the periodic table, but
also horizontally and vertically in Arthur Young’s kingdom grid, of which the
periodic table is a part.
The pattern phrased differently: descents from spirit to matter and ascents back to
spirit again.
Or: learning cycles followed by feedbackloops.
(Action - reaction - observation - control/controlled action (coping) - observation of
significance - trust in reference value - attainment of projected goal.)
Homoeopathic materia medica illustrates distinct imbalances in each of the
distinct steps in such loops.
The implications of detecting this pattern are manyfold. To name some:
~ It allows for making many links with valuable systems outside homoeopathy,
which implies that we may use armamentarium that is developed elsewhere.
~ It makes our language less elusive to others and the language of others less
elusive to us.
~ It enables us to formally link descriptions of imbalances (from several sources)
with specific homoeopathic remedies, which may give a boost to our
understanding of both well-known and unknown remedies.
~ It allows for some additional questions in practice, answers to which point at
distinct, newly arranged groups of possibly indicated remedies in specific cases.
~ Correspondences between the sevens can serve as a scaffolding to facilitate
the study of homoeopathy. It offers the possibility to work from a general overview
towards detail.
~ The fixed structure of the periodic table (- though the forms may vary -) allows
for an integration of static ‘horizontal’ approaches, and dynamic ones. E.g., static
‘Big Five’ ‘trait psychology’ can be integrated with development theories, with our
materia medica as the empirical data to confirm the patterns.
Space forbids exploration of the pattern here, and that is the reason why the book
has been written.
