This document provides learning objectives and discussion questions for a module on gender and deviant acts. The objectives are to analyze social phenomena using theoretical frameworks, identify ethical problems and solutions, explain social deviance and provide examples, and apply theories of deviance to personal experiences. Students are asked to consider how Corinne's addiction from the TV show Intervention might differ if she was a man, and the dynamics of sex and power for women in examples from Chapter 41. They are also asked to discuss whether college women who use hooking up to gain status are similar to Corinne, and whether college party scene women are more or less protected from sexual violence than those in deviant cultures.

1. M7D2: Gender and Deviant Acts
Upon successful completion of this activity, students will be
able to:
Analyze social phenomena utilizing theoretical frameworks
Identify ethical problems faced by individuals or communities
and identify effective solutions
Explain the concept of social deviance and provide examples of
deviant behavior in social context
Acquire a basic understanding of how to apply theories of
deviance to their own personal and professional experiences
While watching the episode of “Intervention” and reading
Chapter 41, consider the roles of sex and gender in these
readings and viewing materials. Imagine how Corinne’s
addiction might look different if she were a man; consider both
the reasons she provides for becoming an addict and the means
she uses to maintain her use and lifestyle.
After reading Chapter 41, consider the dynamics of sex and
power for the women in these examples.
Consider the role of sex and gender in the experiences of the
party girls described in Chapter 41. Would you consider how
the college women in this chapter use “hooking up” and
flirtation to gain social status to be similar to how Corinne uses
sex and gender to maintain their drug habits?
Given that “between one-fifth and one-quarter of women are the
victims of completed or attempted rape while in college” (
p
. 520 Adler & Adler), discuss whether you think college “party
scene” women are more or less sheltered and protected from
sexual violence than women living in “fringe” or “ deviant”
cultures. What are the repercussions of the “party scene” being
located within dominant majority culture?
