The tide is turning… How will we respond? Jana Wolfe Abilene Christian University August 9, 2011
Change is all around us Can you feel it in the wind?
Is it thundering In your ears…
…or is it a quiet whisper
Are you hiding in fear?
Or are you running to embrace it?
How you answer, may make all the difference
There is a Shift Taking Place: According to Hagel, Seely, & Davison, the world is changing around us and the things we did to get where we are now, will no longer keep us there(2010, p.32). Please click on the following link to understand the shift that is occurring, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv8pmIr3a7k&feature=fvst
Face book Web 2.0 Tools My Space 21.2 hours i: the amount of time spent on internet per week 90% of college students use a social network WIKIS The Cloud E-books Blogs The rate of change is growing exponentially ! The rate of change is growing exponentially ! March 17TH , 2010 more than 24 hours of videos uploaded every minute SKYPE Augmented Reality In 2010 2/3rds of college students had a hand held device Spreadsheets are the primary tool used in business Mobile devices Information taken from 2010 ECAR REPORT
So as educators what will we do with this Shift? Will we let it push us around?
Or will we seize the opportunity TO PULL ALL WE CAN FROM THE RIDE?
Our reality is that the world is changing in unprecedented ways, and we must learn how to adapt to these changes in ways that allow us to thrive and not merely survive (Hagel, Seely, & Davison, 2010) How will we help students navigate their coursein order to access all that is available, and capitalize on their rapidly changing landscape?
We must recognize a New Paradigm Named PULL
Seeing what is Happening in the world will allow us to Adapt to this change in education The emerging world for our students will involve ,[object Object]
the ability to access greater numbers of people with similar thoughts and interests across unlimited boundaries
the necessity to access ways to learn faster,[object Object]
Our students need platforms that allow them to get what they need… in order to create what they want… in tandem with other students …across diverse boundaries. THEN THEY WILL “FIND CONNECT INNOVATE “ (Hagel, Seely, & Davison, 2010,P.79)
We Must Teach our Students to be “hunters and Gatherers” Students that can “hunt” for new challenges and “gather ” to themselves knowledge flows, resources, and relationships that will be beneficial to their passions and talents.
We must also help our students attain their highest potential by helping them “pull out of themselves the potential that resides within” (Hagel, Seely,& Davison, 2010, p. 123)
How do we help students achieve their Potential? In a world that has people running faster and faster just to keep up….. How do we help them to thrive and not burn out? How do we help them create the desire to be life long learners?
Passions They need to discover their passions Find others that share them Develop them with others Continue to pursue them Keep the cycle going as more passions are discovered
Pursuing their Passions Will allow them to “harness the power of intrinsic rewards , such as personal growth and satisfaction; and in the process find they are motivated to get better faster at something they love.” (Hagel, Brown, & Davison, 2010, p.126)
Creation Spaces Our challenge as educators is to find ways in which to help our students attract the most useful resources to help them in a safe, yet ever expanding platform. The more diversity… the better.
Using the Power of Pull also involves defining a trajectory Knowing where they are headed allows them to attract more people on their journey and to adjust their path as they grow and gain more knowledge.
Often this will involve encouraging them to stretch, grow, and move out of their comfort zones
The Power of Pull for our students is not an option When we as educators begin to understand the power of pull, we will begin to see the potential in our students. Then, we can help them see a picture of all they can become and help them realize the abundant potential that resides inside each one of them. Isn’t that why we became educators in the first place?

  • 26. The Power of Pull for our students is not an option When we as educators begin to understand the power of pull, we will begin to see the potential in our students. Then, we can help them see a picture of all they can become and help them realize the abundant potential that resides inside each one of them. Isn’t that why we became educators in the first place?
