This document summarizes a sermon given on Mark 9:14-32 about Jesus healing a boy with an unclean spirit. The summary is:
1) Jesus' disciples were arguing with teachers of the law when a crowd gathered around them. A man asked the disciples to cast out his son's unclean spirit but they were unable to.
2) When Jesus asked what they were arguing about, he was told about the boy. Jesus healed the boy by rebuking the spirit and commanding it to never enter him again.
3) After healing the boy, Jesus told the disciples that some kinds of spirits can only be driven out through prayer. The disciples did not understand this and were afraid to

He saw that conscience is not a safe guide in religion. He saw that being religious was not enough. He saw that following traditions can lead you astray. He saw the need for the right source of authority. He saw that man is not saved by prayer alone.

What prevents the non-believing world from truly knowing who Jesus is? (Jn. 1:10-12; 2 Cor. 2:14) Why didn’t Pilate know what Truth was when the One who is Truth was standing only a few feet from him? (John 18:33-38) Why didn’t the disciples understand who Christ was though they had spent three solid years with Him? Why didn’t the disciples on the Emmaus Road know who Jesus was though He had already risen from the dead and reports of His resurrection had been announced to His disciples? (Luke 24:13-35)

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

3. Why Are You Arguing?
Mar 9:14-18 ESV And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great
crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. (15) And
immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and
ran up to him and greeted him. (16) And he asked them, "What are you
arguing about with them?" (17) And someone from the crowd answered
him, "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes
him mute. (18) And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he
foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples
to cast it out, and they were not able."
4. Why Are You Arguing?
Saw A Great
Crowd Were the Disciples Learning?
Mat 9:35-38 ESV And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages,
teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom
and healing every disease and every affliction. (36) When he saw the
crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and
helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (37) Then he said to his
disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; (38)
therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers
into his harvest.
5. Why Are You Arguing?
The Crowd Saw One who
Greatly Amazed Them
Luk 4:36-37 ESV And they were all amazed and said to one another,
"What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the
unclean spirits, and they come out!" (37) And reports about him went
out into every place in the surrounding region.
6. Why Are You Arguing?
Mar 9:16-18 ESV And he asked them, "What are you arguing about with
them?" (17) And someone from the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I
brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. (18)
And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and
grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it
out, and they were not able."
If Jesus truly is the Son of God then why can’t you…?
Joh 14:12-14 ESV "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me
will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do,
because I am going to the Father. (13) Whatever you ask in my name,
this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (14) If you
ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
1Jn 5:14-15 ESV And this is the confidence that we have toward him,
that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
7. Why Are You Arguing?
Eph 4:25-27 ESV Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of
you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of
another. (26) Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on
your anger, (27) and give no opportunity to the devil.
8. A Faithless Generation
Mar 9:19-22 ESV And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how
long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to
me." (20) And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw
him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and
rolled about, foaming at the mouth. (21) And Jesus asked his father,
"How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From
childhood. (22) And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to
destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help
us."
Luk 9:40-41 ESV And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they
could not." (41) Jesus answered, "O faithless and twisted generation,
how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here."

9. A Faithless Generation
How Long Am I to Be With You
Mar 9:31 ESV for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The
Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will
kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise."
Jas 4:14-17 ESV yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What
is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then
vanishes. (15) Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live
and do this or that." (16) As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such
boasting is evil. (17) So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails
to do it, for him it is sin.
We Must Do Right While We Can!
10. A Faithless Generation
How Long Am I to Bear With You
2Co 5:7 ESV for we walk by faith, not by sight.
2Co 5:10-11 ESV For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in
the body, whether good or evil. (11) Therefore, knowing the fear of the
Lord, we persuade others…
12. Mar 9:23-29 ESV And Jesus said to him, "'If you can'! All things are
possible for one who believes." (24) Immediately the father of the child
cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" (25) And when Jesus
saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit,
saying to it, "You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him
and never enter him again." (26) And after crying out and convulsing
him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of
them said, "He is dead." (27) But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted
him up, and he arose. (28) And when he had entered the house, his
disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" (29) And
he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer."
Hebrews 11:1
Philipians 4:13
13. Mar 9:23-29 ESV And Jesus said to him, "'If you can'! All things are

14. Help with My UnBelief
Jas 1:2-6 ESV Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of
various kinds, (3) for you know that the testing of your faith produces
steadfastness. (4) And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may
be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (5) If any of you lacks
wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach,
and it will be given him. (6) But let him ask in faith, with no doubting,
for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed
by the wind.
15. Afraid to Ask
Mar 9:32 ESV But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid
to ask him.
Mat 7:7-8 ESV "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will
find; knock, and it will be opened to you. (8) For everyone who asks
receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will
be opened.
Jas 4:2-4 ESV You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet
and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because
you do not ask. (3) You ask and do not receive, because you ask
wrongly, to spend it on your passions. (4) You adulterous people! Do
you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?
Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an
enemy of God.
