3. A Sinner’s Tears
Luk 7:36-39 ESV One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and
he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at the table. (37)
And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned
that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster
flask of ointment, (38) and standing behind him at his feet, weeping,
she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of
her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. (39)
Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,
"If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of
woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner."
4. A Sinner’s Tears
Who was this woman?
1. Not Mary Magdalene (see Luke 8:1-2 introduced as a new person).
2. Only reason some today say is because Pope Gregory in 591.
3. She was not Mary the sister of Lazarus; Matt. 26:6-13; John 12:1-8.
4. Who was she; she “Was a Sinner.”
2Co 7:10 ESV For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to
salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
6. I Have Something to Say to You Simon
Luk 7:40-43 ESV And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have
something to say to you." And he answered, "Say it, Teacher." (41) "A
certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii,
and the other fifty. (42) When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt
of both. Now which of them will love him more?" (43) Simon
answered, "The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt."
And he said to him, "You have judged rightly."
Romans 3:23; 6:23
1Jn 4:9-10 ESV In this the love of God was made manifest among us,
that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through
him. (10) In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved
us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
7. Do You See?
Luk 7:44-48 ESV Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon,
"Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water
for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with
her hair. (45) You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has
not ceased to kiss my feet. (46) You did not anoint my head with oil, but
she has anointed my feet with ointment. (47) Therefore I tell you, her
sins, which are many, are forgiven--for she loved much. But he who is
forgiven little, loves little." (48) And he said to her, "Your sins are
forgiven."
Joh 1:29 ESV The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,
"Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
8. Do You See?
Mat 13:13-17 ESV This is why I speak to them in parables, because
seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they
understand. (14) Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled
that says: "'You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will
indeed see but never perceive. (15) For this people's heart has grown
dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have
closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and
understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.' (16) But
blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. (17)
For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see
what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not
hear it.
9. Luk 7:49-50 ESV Then those who were at table with him began to
say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" (50)
And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
Luk 5:24 ESV But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority on earth to forgive sins"--he said to the man who was
paralyzed--"I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home."
10. Act 2:22-24 ESV "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of
Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and
wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you
yourselves know-- (23) this Jesus, delivered up according to the
definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by
the hands of lawless men. (24) God raised him up, loosing the pangs
of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
11. Act 2:32-36 ESV This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are
witnesses. (33) Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God,
and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit,
he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
(34) For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself
says, "'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, (35) until I
make your enemies your footstool.' (36) Let all the house of Israel
therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and
Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."
12. Act 2:37-38 ESV Now when they heard this they were cut to the
heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what
shall we do?" (38) And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
13. Php 4:7-9 ESV And the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(8) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is
commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy
of praise, think about these things. (9) What you have learned and
received and heard and seen in me--practice these things, and the
God of peace will be with you.
