3. Jesus and Pharisees - Luke 11:37-54
37 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with
him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.
38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first
washed before dinner.
39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean
the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full
of ravening and wickedness.
40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that
which is within also?
41 But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all
things are clean unto you.
4. 42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all
manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of
God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other
undone.
43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in
the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are
as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them
are not aware of them.
45 Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him,
Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.
46 And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men
with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch
not the burdens with one of your fingers.
5. 47 Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets,
and your fathers killed them.
48 Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers:
for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.
49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them
prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and
persecute:
50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the
foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
6. 51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias which
perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto
you, It shall be required of this generation.
52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of
knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that
were entering in ye hindered.
53 And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the
Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him
to speak of many things:
54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of
his mouth, that they might accuse him.
7. Jesus and Pharisees Overview
Language seems rude, but was normal
In ancient culture, “discussions about religion were very open and direct”

9. Jesus as a boy - Luke 2:41-52
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of
the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to
Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the
child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his
mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went
a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and
acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to
Jerusalem, seeking him.
10. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the
temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and
asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and
answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said
unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father
and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not
that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was
subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with
God and man.

unbelievers do the same? (Matt 5:47)
Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your lifespan? Matt 6:27
Why are you anxious about clothes? Matt 6:28
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye yet fail to perceive the wooden
beam in your own eye? (Matt 7:2)
Do people pick grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? (Matt 7:16)
Why are you terrified? (Matt 8:26)

14. The Risen Lord – Luke 24:13-35 NIV
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called
Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 They were
talking with each other about everything that had
happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with
each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with
them;16 but they were kept from recognizing him.
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you
walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named
Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem
who does not know the things that have happened there in
these days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
15. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a
prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the
people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to
be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had
hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem
Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took
place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They
went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body.
They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels,
who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went
to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they
did not see Jesus.”
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to
believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the
Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his
glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he
explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures
concerning himself.
16. 28 As they approached the village to which they were going,
Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they
urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the
day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave
thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes
were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared
from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts
burning within us while he talked with us on the road and
opened the Scriptures to us?”
33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they
found the Eleven and those with them, assembled
together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has
appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened
on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he
broke the bread.
17. Again, Initiates conversation with question
Stays genuine despite their (sarcastic) response
Quickly adjust to their character/mood when he
responds
Sparks excitement/Fire Starter (Verses 25-26, 32)
Takes the time to revisit the scriptures (Verse 27)
Chooses to hold back part of the story…HIMSELF

What part of DiSC profile? MOVE TO NEXT SLIDE TO HELP
Dominance
This is what I personally am trying to work toward
Doesn’t have to be rude or ill received
Requires:
Facts (You have to know something, someone, and what is right)
People who DON’T know these things, but exhibit Dominant behavior are the WORST
Confidence
Authority (You cant just speak to anyone)
For those any other categegory, it’ll require stepping outside your comfort zone
Luke 2:41-52
wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
Do you have balance?
Think about last conversation or debate you had.
Can you even remember a recent conversation?
Who was it with?
Would you have reacted differently if it was someone else?
Was it one-sided?
Demonstrated an understanding
Its important to give the right answers
But it is equally important to ask the right questions
Right questions keep people engaged
Right questions lead to a deeper conversation
Right questions (when aimed at the right person) get you the right answers
Simple question - We make things so complicated sometimes, which is why we avoid conversation (at least I do)
Throws their sarcasm back at them – This may not have worked with others
