PROFILE

During my studies so far, I have devel-

3. “For the future of our world, every child needs to grow up as a climate
change warrior - how can the architecture of schools nurture this?”
In this brief, I was instructed to explore how architecture can be used
to reconnect people with the environment through the design of
spaces for children. I was challenged with the concept to ‘rethink’ the
ordinary natures of typical schools, take a step back and understand
the architecture in itself as a ‘third teacher’.
(De)Schooling an Eco-Warrior - DES3A - 3rd Year
This project involved designing two teaching spaces within the St John’s the
Diving School grounds in Camberwell, London. The architecture of these two
spaces must, in some way connect children to the natural environment and
encourage them to grow up into an ‘eco-warrior’.
The garden on the original school site was underused and unloved. With AstroTurf
grass and minimal plants, my aim was to transform this space into a year round
garden oasis. A green escape from the grey of the urban surroundings for the
children to grow up in.

4. 1:100 ELEVATIONS
My response to the brief was to design a multi-functional building for
the extended school day. Before school hours, the building operates as
a breakfast club for children from working households. After school, the
same concept is applied and an after school club is held in the building,
allowing parents to collect their children after work. During the summer
holidays, the site can also be used for summer school clubs and various
other activities.
The gardens were the second teaching space. Each garden is
dedicated to each of the four seasons with plants growing in them that
thrive in that particular season. The plants chosen were also bee friendly
plants to allow bees to feed and nest all year round, helping them in the
harsh urban environment.
The exterior spaces, including the seasoned gardens and allotments
are mixed used by both the school and the general public. After school
hours and during the school holidays, the gardens act as a community
garden for the local community to help reconnect the city dwellers to
the natural environment. The allotments will also encourage them to
grow their own foods.

5. In January 2020 I spent two weeks at Chapman Taylor’s London office as
part of my ‘Preparing for Practice’ module at university. This experience
gave me a first hand insight on what to expect working in a large
practice and I got the opportunity to work alongside the architects and
the interiors team.
The project shown is a refurbishment of an office space in Bristol that I
worked on directly with the interior team. In my first week, I was required
to draw up the existing ground floor plan in AutoCad and then worked
on the space planning of it. The client wanted the ground floor to be
transformed from a generic office floor into a mix-used space including
a space to eat, a space to meet, and a co-working space. I was
responsible for working out the areas I thought would be best for each
of these spaces. I was also required to make a mood board of the ‘look
and feel’ I was proposing for the new layout.
The director of the interiors team then presented this to the client. The
client liked my ideas so in the second week I developed the concept
using Sketch-up and Enscape to provide the client with more detailed
visuals of my proposed concept.

7. In this brief, I was instructed to design a multi-purpose build for the
International Institute of Cosmism (IIC) that combines film, installation
and day to day living in a single complex. The building’s main purpose
would be a place of work where the Cosmists would film and produce
their films.
I started the project by researching the Russian Suprematist artist,
Kazimir Malevich, specifically his suprematist film. I then constructed my
building out of various suprematist inspired shapes.
The site for this brief was a large 300x150m car park in Stevenage, UK.
The site was very large and flat with ample sunlight so there were many
possibilities to explore. To continue the flow of movement between work
spaces and leisure spaces in the building, I extended the walkway that
runs from Stevenage town centre to the train station through the large
atrium of my design.

9. As part of my second year technical module, I was required to produce technical drawings of a
chosen part of my building. I decided to focus on the film making studio as this area had the most
interesting and detailed features I could explore.
The three technical moments of my design are the vegetated roof, the drainage and foundation
systems and the supporting truss to column connection.
Then, using research of my three unique details, I drew up scaled detailed sections of each area I
was exploring.

10. As part of my second year technical module, I was required
to contact an architect practice and ask to visit one of their
active building sites and document the process. I contacted
the London based firm Tasou Associates, who specialise in luxury
residential builds. I found this experience incredibly useful as I
learned all about the architect’s role in the construction process
which has enabled me to develop a deeper understanding of
the profession and how the design team works together.

12. This is a project that I completed during my time of work expe-
rience at Arup Associates in London in 2014. My brief instructed
me to design a pavilion for Fitzroy Square, London. I chose to
design a cafe with a built in student study area, to provide a
tranquil environment for students to come and study as there
are many halls of residence in the local area.
During this experience, I learned how to use SketchUp and Revit
and at the end of my time there, I was able to present my design
to the design team.
