LEARNING PACKAGE IN ENGLISH III
                                    HIGH SCHOOL

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
    A. identify the ideas in a sentence stated in parallel structure;
    B. manifest the value balancing everything they do; and
    C. revise ungrammatical sentences by observing parallelism.

Sub-Topic: Parallelism

                               Learning Experiences REMARKS
         (Routine Activities)
         -prayer
         -checking of attendance
         -housekeeping
         -review of the past lesson

         A.EXPLORE
         1. Do you also balance things? What are these that you balance?
(ex. Academics and extra-curricular activities) Why do you think
         you should balance them?
         2. What if, for instance you weren’t able to balance those things
that you have given? What do you think will happen? What are
the things that will be affected?
         3. Today, we shall continue discussing Parallelism. We will focus
on parallelism using correlatives (coordinating conjunctions),
comparisons, and lists. But before that, let’s have a brief recap of
what we have discussed last meeting on parallelism.
         4. What is parallelism again? What are the first rules that we
         discussed regarding parallelism?

         B.FIRM-UP
         1. Let’s proceed with the other rules in parallelism.
         Principal Rule
*For parallel structure, balance nouns with nouns,
         prepositional phrases with prepositional phrases,
participles with participles, infinitives with infinitives, and
         clauses with clauses.

Let’s read and analyze the following example sentences:
         a. She is mad about watching TV more than to surf the net.
What did you notice in the sentence? Does it have a parallel
         structure? Why or why not?
What rule can you derive from this?

         b. The cybercrime law is testing our country whether we’re truly a
democracy or whether just a democracy on paper.
What did you notice in the sentence? Does it have a parallel
structure? Why or why not?
Do we have a correlative in the sentence? What is it?
Then what are Correlatives?
What rule can you derive from this?

c. Effectivity of that law is not conditioned upon the adoption of
the IRR and the setting up of the Office of Cybercrime.
What did you notice in the sentence? Does it have a parallel
structure? Why or why not?
What rule can you derive from this?

d. The lawmakers also assailed the provision that allowed
government agencies to disclose, to preserve, to search, to seize
and destroy computer data.
What did you notice in the sentence? Does it have a parallel
structure? Why or why not?
What rule can you derive from this?

C.DEEPEN
What now is the importance of parallelism in writing? Why do we
need to make sure that the sentences are parallel?
*Parallel construction prevents awkwardness and promotes clarity.
Balanced or symmetrical elements also tend to be more concise.
Writers who face the challenge of stating several ideas in one
sentence can often achieve this goal with remarkable clarity if they
arrange these ideas in a balanced series. This series might
comprise parallel nouns or phrases, or it might comprise a more
sophisticated sequence of parallel clauses. The result is not only
easier for the reader to follow but also more pleasing aesthetically.

Why do you need to balance the things that you do? (For instance,
academics with extra-curricular activities.)
* Balance means that we portion our time and energy in a way that
benefits our whole life. We get out of balance when one aspect of
our life is stealing time and energy from the others.
To be balanced, we need to give sufficient attention to all of life’s
important areas, including our physical, emotional and spiritual well
being. We need to be creative, as well as productive. We need to
care about what is going on in the lives of those around us instead
of just focusing on the task at hand. Balance means that work is
just a part of the picture, not the whole panorama.

Seatwork:
Students will make the following sentences parallel.
Rewrite it on a one-half sheet of pad paper.
1. The law, they further said, would have a “chilling impact” on
bloggers, online journalists and to other Internet users because
websites could be taken down without due process.
2. Amending the law would bring it back to its original intention of
combating websites on child pornography, on data and identity
theft, and to other Internet scams.
3. The implementation of the law will take back our citizens to
the Dark Ages where freedom of speech and to express was not
recognized.
4. The Supreme Court held in abeyance its decision on whether to
issue a temporary restraining order on the law or pending the
study of the petition of private groups.
5. The Filipinos should never be left to cower on the sidelines,
their thoughts and voices should not be shackled by fear and by
intimidating.

                                                           Mina, Lorna Cammille
                                                                        BSEd-4
