Saheb-e-Alam: A rag picker • Sometimes “I find a RUPEE in the GARBAGE.” Saheb-e-Alam • Every morning he is scrounging for some valuable in the garbage • The rag pickers have migrated from Dhaka and found a settlement in Seemapuri. Their fields and homes had been swept away by storms. • Garbage is a means of survival for the elders and for the children it is something wrapped in wonder. • These people have desires and ambitions for things that are unreachable to them, namely shoes, tennis game etc. • Saheb joins a tea stall where he could earn 800 Rupees and all the meals. He is not happy as the job has taken away his freedom. • He also assures the Author that he will go to school when one is built near his house.
- 4. Mukesh: Son of a bangle maker “I want to drive a car” says Mukesh, who belongs to the family of Bangle-makers of Firozabad, a well known city for its glass- bangles. He is engaged in this business and works in a bangle factory. The living condition and the working environment is a woeful tale. Life in dingy cells and working close to hot furnaces make these children blind when they step into the adulthood. Mukesh is different from the rest of them He dreams to become a motor mechanic. The garage where he wants to learn the desired work is far away from his house but still he is ready to walk.
- 5. The theme of the chapter is the grinding poverty and the traditions which condemn poor children to a life of exploitation. The two stories taken together depict the plight of street children forced into labour early in life and denied the opportunity of schooling. Lost spring convey with this contest is " spring is associated with childhood .just as spring is the season when flower blooms , similarly childhood is the period when an individual blooms and grows .Anees Jung here present the horrific truth about the life of children in India who are victims of child labour and are not allowed to grow and bloom freely .Their childhood or spring time is lost. Anees Jung gives voice to eliminate the child labour and to enforce the laws against child labour by the government. SUMMARY
