Dear Sir/Ma’am,
It gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to recommend my student, Siddarth
Kaul for the full time position at your esteemed organization. Siddarth has assisted me as a
Teaching Assistant and also as a Research Assistant, and in both instances, his performance has
been exceptional. He has demonstrated excellence in conducting high quality novel research
with potential for significant societal impact. Also his performance in the courses has been
excellent as evident from the GPA of 3.94. He has clearly demonstrated outstanding academic
achievement and excellent work ethic.
I am the Director of the Graduate Program in Chemical Engineering at the University of
Florida. This position gives me the opportunity to interact with all graduate students in our
department. We admit about 70 graduate students each year and based on my evaluation
Siddarth is in the top 5% of the Graduate Students in our department. I was impressed by
Siddarth’s undergraduate credentials when I reviewed his application for the Masters program.
He had an aggregate record from Panjab University in India, which has excellent reputation for
high quality education. I first met Siddarth during Advanced Bio-Chemical lab course, which I co-
teach with several other faculty. I was very impressed by his understanding of the fundamental
concepts as well as the attention to details in conducting the experiments. He also prepared a
detailed, well-written report for the experiments on fabrication of hydrogels for drug delivery.
Based on his undergraduate credentials and the excellent performance in the class, I offered
him a position in my research team. I also offered him the position of the Teaching Assistant for
the Chem & Bio Lab course. As a Graduate teaching assistant, he assists the students with
preparation and characterization of Hydrogels and measurement of drug transport through
them. He possesses good communication skills which are evident from his interactions with the
students and his ability to express and present ideas clearly.
My lab has an ongoing program in ophthalmic drug delivery. While working in this area we
realized that the eye drop formulations contain preservatives which are toxic to the eye, but are
essential to avoid bacterial contamination. Siddarth has been instrumental in developing a
novel solution to this problem by designing particles that can selectively remove the
preservative from the eye drop solutions without reducing the drug concentration. By placing
this material in the neck of the eye drop bottles we can retain the benefits of the preservative in
the formulation but remove it as the solution elutes from the bottle into the eyes. This was a
great accomplishment with a potential for immense impact by reducing the exposure to toxic
preservatives for hundreds of millions patients that use eye drops. This research could
eventually be used for removal of preservatives from other medical formulations and possibly
2. foods as well. A patent for this technology will be filed soon and we are working towards
designing a prototype eye drop bottle.
In summary, Siddarth is an intelligent and a creative student, with a strong interest and
aptitude for research. He can successfully manage many tasks simultaneously, while performing
each task successfully. He is a team player, excellent communicator and writer, hard worker,
adept at both theoretical as well as experimental research. Finally, he is very friendly and gets
along very well with everyone. I very strongly recommend him for the full time position.
Please feel free to contact me for any further information.
Regards
