1. Lolita Response #2
By: Morgan Galloway
As I stated in the last assignment Humbert is a victim of intense grief that
affects his actions. The beauty that Lolita possesses clouds his knowledge of
right and wrong. He views her as something that he cannot ignore, he knows
that the thing he is doing is wrong but he cannot help himself. He has a very
sexual relationship with him. He even tells Lolita that he is the only one that
she can trust. She performs sexual favors for him so she will receive money,
and other things that she wants. Humbert does all of this simply because of
her beauty. In his mind she is Annabel and he is reliving the days of his
adolescence with her and completing what he could never finish before
Annabel died.
He begins his travels with Lolita along the U.S indulging in her many
desires. He must have Lolita to cooperate with him if they are to be together
and emphasizes that if she accuses him of rape that she will be put in a
reform school. They pick up some hitchhikers along the journey due to
Lolita. Their sexual activity causes her to develop an air about her that
attracts other men and boys so he tries to prevent her from flirting with other
boys. Humbert later takes Lolita to a beach and tries to re-create the events
that transpired between him and Annabel. This proves his behavior that he
believes that Lolita is Annabel.
2. During the following months they are met with various resistance.
They almost caught many times in public and problems with police. With
help he acquires a home on 14 Thayer Street. Lolita attends school, which
Humbert of course finds a problem with. This along with other things proves
that Humbert does care about Lolita and may even love her but doesn’t
know how to express it. Lolita and Hubert’s relationship eventually strains
and she demands more money than Humbert can afford. He even steals from
her so she wont leave him. Their relationship falls on hard times and Lolita
wants nothing to do with Humbert causing him to become more desperate.
He continues to chase his last hope for of happiness since Annabel. Lolita
seems to show some troublesome tendencies. The schools teachers tell
Humbert that she knows a large amount of curse words and that she should
start dating boys. They have a big fight and eventually come to terms, which
she wants to move to Hollywood. Lolita eventually leaves him and Humbert
searches for her, as this was his Annabel. He learns that she ran away with a
playwright from a play they went to. She is pregnant and so ends their time
together and Humbert leaves her for one last time with complete and utter
sorrow.
