Music Video AnalysisIslands- “The xx”
The band’s music genre is Indie The director of the bands “The xx” music video was SaamFarahmand
The music video was visually dense which meant that it was suitable for multiple viewings by the audience as it engages the audience into the music video. The camera shots were from different perspectives which may have confused the audience at first as it shots were repeated. This concept fits in with Andrew Goodwin’s theory that in some music videos you can see the beat. This video reinforced this as the speed of the editing and dance made it fit in perfectly with the beat of the song.
The concept of the music video was very unique and defiantly something different for the audience. Visually it was very simple yet effective. Although the scenery did not change the artistic dance and the actual band members made it seem as if it was two different scenes like they weren't seeing each other. The music video had elements of Sven Carlson’s theory as it had a dance and song performance although the band members seemed like they were really chilled and relaxed which reflects the values of the genre of music they make.
The whole atmosphere and setting of the music video seems very spiritual. There were no close ups of the band members. This shows that they want the audience to value their music more than their visual image which is going against Carlson’s “commercial exhibitionist theory.
