Angharad Wilkins took photos of several locations along the Welsh coast near Mumbles on December 31st, 2012 between 8:06 am and 8:52 am. The photos document the heavy rain and strong winds at Limeslade Bay, Bracelet Bay, Rotherslade, Langland Bay, and Caswell Bay, showing the choppy seas and crashing waves at each location.

Heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across Cumbria in northern England in 2009, with a conveyor of warm, moist air from the Azores bringing 34 hours of steady rain to the region. The floods were especially severe where rivers converged in towns like Cockermouth, due to the heavy rain overwhelming drainage systems. Human factors were urbanization increasing impermeable surfaces and faster water flow into rivers, and blocked or inadequate sewers in towns like Cockermouth and Keswick that caused flooding.

Rescue teams worked through the night to try to reach at least 100 people reportedly buried in rubble, sending messages from those trapped. The quake toppled the cathedral spire, flattened tall buildings, and sent debris falling on vehicles and pedestrians, killing at least 65 people.

The village of Boscastle in Cornwall, UK suffered severe flooding in August 2004 when 89mm of rain fell in one hour. The heavy rainfall combined with the steep, narrow valleys and impermeable soil meant water quickly overwhelmed the narrow river channels running through the village. Over 150 people had to be rescued by helicopter and many homes and businesses were damaged by the floodwaters.

The epicenter was much closer to the city center at only 5 km below ground versus 40 km for the September quake. This, along with it occurring during a weekday lunch hour when more people were in offices and stores, led to higher casualties as buildings already weakened from the previous quake collapsed. The damage extended beyond the city center into suburban and rural areas, and Christchurch Cathedral was among the structures lost.

Holderness Coastline - Management
The Holderness Coastline in eastern England has some of the fastest erosion rates in Europe, averaging around 2 meters per year. The geology of the area, consisting of soft glacial till deposited over 12,000 years ago, is highly erodible and is being rapidly worn away by the sea. The village of Mappleton provides a case study of coastal management efforts, where rock groynes were constructed in 1991 to reduce erosion, but have shifted the erosion problem further south. Spurn Point at the southern end of the coastline consists of material deposited by longshore drift and acts as a barrier, though its position is now fixed through artificial defenses.

3) Erosion occurs in four zones - the cliff face, nearshore beach, offshore clay face, and protected offshore seabed. Cliff erosion averages 1.7m/year while offshore erosion likely matches this rate, totaling around 3 million cubic meters of erosion

Waves are formed by wind blowing over the surface of the sea. The height and energy of waves depends on wind strength, duration, and fetch. There are two main types of waves - constructive waves which build land, and destructive waves which erode land. Coastal geology also influences landscapes. Discordant coasts have bands of rock at 90 degrees to the sea, creating headlands and bays as softer rocks erode faster. Concordant coasts have parallel rock bands, where erosion of harder rocks leads to fast erosion of softer rocks behind.

The Tidal Regime of the Severn Estuary
Paul Evans graduated from Cardiff University in 2006 with a 2:1 in Marine Geography. During his time at Cardiff University, Paul worked at HR Wallingford as part of an optional Year in industry where he worked on a number of commercial projects as a coastal hydraulic physical modeller. Paul subsequently studied for a Masters in Coastal Engineering at The University of Plymouth and completed a dissertation researching the protective capabilities of seawalls.
Between 2007 and 2008, Paul was employed as a Research Assistant at Cardiff University (School of Earth and Ocean Sciences) where he undertook various tidal resource assessments for potential tidal stream turbine sites.
In July 2008, Paul joined Waterman Transport and Development Ltd. as a Graduate Engineer in the Cardiff Office. Paul has over 4 years experience in hydrology and flood risk analysis, using FEH hydrological modelling techniques and 1D, 2D hydraulic modelling software, namely HEC-RAS and TUFLOW packages.
Paul is currently a Research Assistant at Cardiff University (as part of the Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI) convergence programme) to again investigate the resource potential at various sites along the Welsh coastline, namely Ramsey Sound. He has been working closely with Tidal Energy Limited to help choose the most suitable location within Ramsey Sound to install their delta-shaped tidal turbine in terms of suitable substrate, a flat seabed and sufficient tidal flow. Paul uses his GIS skills to map and model various sites in order to visualise and interpret the tidal flow data collected onboard Cardiff University’s Research Vessel Guiding Light. Paul is also studying for a PhD into the hydrodynamics of significant bathymetric features.
With the second highest tidal range in the world, the Severn Estuary has a unique tidal regime. This will be the main focus of this presentation, introducing the science behind such a unique tidal range and how the physical environment of the Severn Estuary can alter or may be altered in the future.
Coasts

Waves coming directly onto shore are more destructive than waves hitting the coast at an angle, as destructive waves have more energy to erode the land.
