Nearly 4,500 practitioners in 23 countries completed an online survey in nine languages. The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations conducted a cross-cultural leadership study of current issues facing public relations leaders. Dr. Bruce Berger, who served as chief investigator for a team of 28 researchers, carried out the largest-ever global study of leadership in communication management. Dr. Berger presented the results at the 2013 PRSA International Conference. The study revealed digital, gender, generational and skill shifts.

CIPR President's Q4 2014 Report: Handover

This document is the Q4 2014 report from the President of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR). Governance changes reformed the organization to be more purposeful and business focused. The CIPR invested in content, policy, and education to make membership more relevant. It led campaigns on ethics, equality, standards, and other issues in the UK and beyond. While progress was made, the President notes there is still work to do on modernization in 2015.

#FuturePR Public Relations Competency Framework discussion

The document summarizes a roundtable discussion on developing competency frameworks for the public relations profession. It identifies the need for frameworks to benchmark skills, identify training needs, and reduce hiring risks. Two existing frameworks - ECOPSI and the UK Government Communications Framework - were presented as examples. Next steps include producing a discussion paper and sharing it for broader industry feedback to advance the development of PR competency frameworks.

Recruiting, Retaining and Managing Millennials: Insights from Interviews

Attracting, managing, and developing the next generation of public relations leaders has emerged as a key challenge in the field. Though academic and trade scholarship addresses millennials in the general workplace, there is a relative dearth of information about millennials in public relations. This project offers a practical perspective of millennial professionals’ expectations of the field, and executives’ management techniques. As the numbers and statistics show an increasingly-influential group in the workforce, recruitment, retention, engagement, and development of millennials become crucial to organizational success. Researchers, Dr. Juan Meng, Holley Reeves (doctoral candidate) and Dr. Bryan Reber, interviewed millennial PR professionals and the executives who hire and manage them. Several key themes emerged — relationships are key; workplace diversity is embraced; leadership development is expected; technological savviness is innate; and social responsibility is a workplace enhancement.

Graffiti or street art is the rawest form of media. It challenges culture and society through both its medium and its message. Critics dismiss it as vandalism, and the art and media establishment largely ignores it. That’s important as it ensure that street art remains a genre of sub-culture. In my view street art is a mirror on society that you won’t find in a focus group or tabloid newspaper. Business people and politicians would do well to take note. North American Communication Monitor - 2018 Tracking Trends

The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations sponsored the North American Communication Monitor (NACM), the first survey of its kind in North America, to explore the status quo, qualities and trends of communication management in North America. The survey, which launched in May 2018, addresses topics including “fake news” and how to tackle it, how communicators provide insights for decision-making, as well as leadership performance, job satisfaction and personal stress among communication professionals in the United States and Canada. Characteristics of excellent communication departments will be identified and benchmarked against results from other key markets in Asia-Pacific, Europe and Latin America.

Plank Center Webinar: Women & Leadership in Public Relations

Progress in gender diversity in public relations remains painfully slow in many ways, but Time’s Up for the field. According to The Homes Report, women make up about 70% of the PR workforce, but they only hold about 30% of the top positions in the industry. The Plank Center hosted a free webinar titled “Women and Leadership in Public Relations.” The Center’s 2017 Leadership Report Card found that being successful in the field is still challenging for women—the pay gap is real; the opportunity gap is real; and the being-heard-and-respected-gap is real. The webinar discusses bridging those gaps, including action items for current leaders at all organizational levels. Leadership Report Card (2017)

In 2015, The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations and Heyman Associates produced its first Report Card on PR Leaders. Leaders earned passing grades for the five areas examined—leadership performance, job engagement, trust in the organization, work culture and job satisfaction—but crucial gaps highlighted areas for improvement. Nearly 1,200 PR leaders and professionals in the U.S. recently completed the same survey. Grades for leadership performance and trust were unchanged in 2017, but slipped for work culture, job engagement and job satisfaction. The overall grade for PR leaders fell from B- to C+. Gaps between leaders’ and employees’ perceptions of the five areas remained wide, while gender differences deepened. Presentation designed by Britt Buzan.

Becoming a PR Leader: The Art and Science of Mentorship

For young professionals, having a mentor is often encouraged and touted; however, knowing how to find and effectively engage in such relationships is not necessarily easy or intuitive. This panel draws on primary and secondary research funded by the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations, the expertise of an employee engagement expert, and a public relations professional with experience in both corporate and agency settings to help attendees better understand and navigate mentoring relationships. Panelists will share both personal experiences and research insights derived from a survey of more than 400 millennial PR professionals; interviews with 50+ PR professionals and students across five countries; and a review of nearly 200 mentoring studies and articles. Specific topics include best organizational and interpersonal mentoring practices, mentoring’s role in growing diverse organizations and mentoring’s connection to leadership development. By the end of this session, participants will be able to: • Define what research tells us about mentorship’s value to PR practitioners in both the U.S. and abroad, and its link to PR leadership. • Reflect on the different kinds of mentors (personal, academic, professional) and will learn about the importance of mentorship in growing diverse, inclusive workplaces. • Analyze the 10 best organizational and interpersonal mentoring practices and will receive practical tips and advice for building and fostering them. Championing Diversity and Inclusion to Recruit and Retain Top Talent

According to the Social and Demographic Trends from Pew Research Center, millennials are the most racially diverse generation in American history. Results of a most recent study sponsored by the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations and the Institute for Public Relations, suggest that more than 70 percent of surveyed millennial public relations professionals value diversity of people at work. In addition, more than 60 percent of them indicated they are very supportive of social causes and socially responsible companies. Results also suggest when companies are more engaged in developing socially responsible strategies and programs, their millennial PR professionals tend to be more engaged in their job and their organization. To address millennial PR professionals’ needs and expectations for generating a positive impact on the community and society, this panel offers discussion and implications on how to create a dedicated corporate environment focusing on a more caring, inclusive and diverse culture to attract millennial top talent. Such a corporate environment could be critical in at least five ways: as a source of diversity and inclusion, as a driver of accountability, as a resource for shared power and continued development, as a stimulus for engagement and as a key to long-term success. Practical solutions will be discussed. By the end of this session, participants will be able to: - Examine cutting-edge survey data for insights about how diversity and inclusion initiatives help to recruit and retain millennial workers in PR. These insights are essential knowledge for managers as they supervise an increasingly diverse workforce. - Interpret surveys about diversity and inclusion tactics that illustrate simple ways to engage millennial employees. - Share case studies of best practices in diversity and inclusion as developed by global PR agency Burson-Marsteller and others.

Building Your Brand and Finding That First Job

Ethics in PR Education

This document summarizes a panel discussion on ethics in public relations education. The panelists included PR professors and professionals. They discussed the importance of teaching ethics, how to teach ethics effectively, and perspectives on ethics from young professionals and senior executives. Case studies and real-world examples were emphasized as the most helpful ways to teach ethics over lectures. Students value learning about ethical dilemmas and how to say no to unethical requests from management. Companies are beginning to offer ethics training but it often focuses more on compliance than cultivating values. Upholding transparency and credibility remains an ongoing challenge for the PR profession.

Millennials, Diversity & Inclusion in the PR Industry

There is much discussion in the PR and communication industry about the role and impact of the millennial generation on the workforce and workplace culture. Research shows that millennial communication professionals (MCPs) are the most diverse and socially and politically engaged generation to date, and that they expect organizations to be diverse and inclusive. However, there is a gap between desires and expectations, and how to actually achieve these conditions. This slideshow was featured in a webinar, hosted by The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations. The webinar focused on research about the experiences of MCPs, and specifically addressed the following: - What does research tell us about MCPs and their views on diversity and inclusion? - How do minority MCPs manage cultural perceptions – their own and those of others about them? 30 Days of Betsy Plank

It’s no secret that the late Betsy Plank was, and is, a public relations legend. As a longtime professional and advocate for PR education, her impact on the industry still resonates today. At The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations, we continue to channel Betsy’s spirit and passion as we develop and recognize current and future leaders, mentors and role models in the public relations industry. Betsy Plank (1924-2010) is often referred to as the "First Lady of Public Relations". She is an inspiration and continues to be recognized as an honored leader, mentor and matriarch of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the public relations profession.
