A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Health and Safety Getting Involved
Safety and Security
We provide you with a safe environment in
which to live and learn. Residence Hall exterior
doors are locked 24/7 and you must be a build-
ing resident with card access to enter. Security
cameras are located on all exterior doors of
residence halls. The UCA Police Department
leads the way in creating a secure environment
for students. We have 28 full-time sworn police
officers providing around-the-clock law enforce-
ment, public safety, emergency management
and 911 call services to the UCA community.
The UCA PD provides emergency notifications
for weather or campus-related situations, motor
assistance for dead batteries or keys locked in
the car and a security escort program to assist
students across campus. Additionally, UCA PD
officers live on campus as part of the residential
police program.
Student Health
UCA has several health services to give students
peace of mind. The Student Health Clinic
(SHC) is staffed by a physician and four nurse
practitioners, all with prescriptive authority.
They diagnose, treat and monitor the needs
of their patients. In addition to general family
practice services, the SHC offers lab and x-ray
work, as well as immunizations and a variety of
procedures. The Women’s Health Clinic meets
the needs of our female population. In most
cases, the cost is covered through tuition and
fees. UCA promotes health education through
our Wellness Center, counseling services and
the HPER Center. Counseling services are
accredited and include programs for college
adjustment, test anxiety, relationship concerns
and depression.
Intramurals (residence hall division)
The purpose of the Intramural sports program is to provide an opportunity for every student at UCA
to participate in some type of competitive sports activity as regularly as his or her interest, ability and
time will permit. Intramural activities range from traditional sports such as flag football, basketball
and slow-pitch softball to more non-traditional sports such as table tennis, badminton and track.
Resident Housing Association (RHA)
RHA at UCA is a chapter of the world’s largest student-run organization. It is the voice for all
students who live on campus. RHA facilitates campus-wide events that promote inclusiveness and
fun. The organization offers leadership opportunities through regional, national and international
conferences each year. RHA is about making new friends, getting involved on campus and gaining
valuable resumé experience.
Cubs
Cubs are elected students representatives from each residence hall or apartment complex. They cater
to the residents in each complex by having social and academically focused events every month.
Being a Cub allows students to gain valuable experience with event planning, budgeting and market-
ing. Additionally, these experiences may lead to other leadership roles at UCA.

Which Residential College
is right for you?
Why Choose a Residential College?
Whether you’re interested in the arts,
science, community service, business,
health and wellness or leadership, there
is a residential community to meet your
needs. Each of our five residential
college communities has its own unique
character and theme.
UCA brings learning to life through a resi-
dential college system unlike anywhere else
in Arkansas. We’re the only four-year public
university in the state to make residential
colleges available to all incoming freshmen.
Our five residential colleges are learning
communities that allow you to take classes
where you live while working closely with
upperclassmen and faculty in residence.
It’s an atmosphere that results in higher
grades, 10 percent more students return-
ing to school for the next semester and 12
percent more students graduating. Students
get to know their professors, develop close
relationships with their fellow students, and
get the opportunity to work closely with
their residential college mentors.
• Increase your chances of academic success.
• Residential College students earn higher grades and are more
likely to return to college after completing their first year.
• Get to know your fellow students while completing
UCA Core classes.
• Get involved in campus activities and civic organizations.
• Residential College students work closely with local volunteer
organizations to be a positive influence on the community.
• Being part of a Residential College allows you to take classes with
other students who live in your building. You will make life-long
friends, form study groups and feel at home quickly.

Greek Village
Phase One of the project slated to open at the beginning of the fall 2015 semester, the Greek Village project will accommodate the many needs
of an expanding greek community with beautiful housing, chapter room spaces, and brand new common-use spaces. The project will also
redefine and enhance the northeast corner of UCA by welcoming visitors, students, and community members to the campus with beautiful,
red brick Colonial Georgian architecture. Greek Village will not only help our fraternity and sorority community grow, but it will also set UCA
apart from other campuses in the region with a unique living environment for generations to come. Visit uca.edu/gogreek for more information.
