The recent death of a patient during a live surgery demonstration in
AIIMS has persuaded the organizers of a national surgery conference in
Delhi to replace a live surgery demonstration that was listed in the
original schedule with unedited video recordings of surgeries.
The Indraprastha Apollo Hospital was to host the annual conference of
the Association of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of India in September. It
had included a pre-conference live workshop for laparoscopic and
robotic surgery . However, Dr Deepak Govil, organizing secretary of the
conference, has informed participants of the change in the programme
stating: “Presently there is lot of apprehension about the live workshop
in view of the recent conference at AIIMS.

After discussing with our hospital authorities at Apollo Hospitals in detail,
our organizing committee has decided to do away with the live workshop on
17th September and instead hold a video work shop during that period. “ In
the meantime, Dr Sami ran Nundy , chairperson of the committee for ethical
practice in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has issued a circular to all consult ants in
the hospital listing de tailed guidelines to be followed for live surgical
demonstrations. Stating that the rights of the patient and his or her safety in
the operating theatre are paramount and should be considered the primary
focus, the circular stated that patients should be fully informed of the risks
and benefits of the procedure by the primary surgeon and legally consent to
having the procedure performed during a live surgical demonstration.

A clear understanding should be maintained throughout that patient safety
overrides any educational objectives of the program, stated the circular,
adding that the operation and audio or visual communication with the live
audience should be terminated at any time during the live surgical
demonstration if it is deemed to be in the best interest of the safety of the
patient. The Medical Council of In dia, which had clarified in 2004 that live
surgeries are admissible as long as they were done for teaching and training
and not for personal or monetary gains, did not respond to TOI's questions
on whether there is any monitoring of live surgeries taking place in India. The
questions sought details of permissions given, whether there was any
stipulation that adverse events at live surgery demos must be re ported back
to MCI and whether MCI has kept track of how patients fare in such live
demos.
