2- simile: making a comparison
between two things, or persons, by
using the words like, similar to, as, or
seem.
He is like a fox in cunningness.
She is like a queen in dignity.

4. 3- Metaphor: making a comparison between two
things, or persons, without using the words like,
similar to, as, or seem.
I don’t like living in the house, it is a grave made
for death.
We went to Balakayati, it is paradise.

5. 4- Alliteration: Repeating of the beginning of
words by using consonant sounds.
The sly snake slithers slowly in the sand.
5- Onomatopoeia: words that sound, in their
pronunciation, similar to their meaning. By
the way you pronounce, you guess their
meanings.

6. 6- personification: using human
characteristics for non-humans.

7. 7- Hyperbole: when we
exaggerate over the description
of something and make it seem
more effective than it really is.
I have told you a million time!
My mobile weighs a ton.

8. 8- Irony: You say something but
you imply otherwise.
My students are genius! They
all failed in my subject.
Your English has a level of
perfection. We need to say

The oil of my car is incredibly

9. 9- Oxymoron: using two
opposite words altogether.
He is an old young man.
This winter is a fiery one.
It is a dark bright night.
It is a sweet bitter lie.

10. 10- Euphemisms: saying
something indirectly, often
in a polite way, so that it
wouldn’t hurt anyone’s
feeling.
“Passed away” instead of “died”
‘Lunatic asylum’ instead of ‘mental
hospital’.
‘spend a penny’ instead of ‘taking pee’
“pregnancy termination” instead of
“abortion”
