WhatisGeneva2020?
WewillbuildastrongerGenevabyharnessingthe
resourcesoftheentirecommunityin

preparedforlivesofconsequence.
An umbrella for all programs and organizations that support our youth.
An initiative that finds solutions to the problems facing Geneva’s youth.
A uniting force for all of Geneva behind our schools and our kids.
What we are NOT?
A program. A fundraising initiative. A great idea that will fizzle out.
One person’s vision. Competition. Judgment.

2011—Geneva 2020 was first conceived around HWS President Mark Gearan’s dining
room table with key community members discussing John Kania and Mark Kramer’s
2011 article, “Collective Impact” in the Stanford Social Innovation Review.
2012—HWS became the anchor entity of Geneva 2020.
2013—The Geneva Education Foundation convened after Geneva 2020 conversations
uncovered the need for a funding source for the Geneva City School District.
2014—Geneva 2020 became an official partner of the SUNY Cradle to Career Network.
2015—Geneva 2020 is awarded a grant from the William G. McGowan Charitable
Fund, which, along with matching funds from HWS, allows for the hiring of the Geneva
2020 Program Coordinator. In April, there is a community-wide convening for Geneva
2020.
2016—Geneva 2020 became an official StriveTogether member.

For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in
general, a basic human right.... Literacy is, finally, the road to
human progress and the means through which every man,
woman and child can realize his or her full potential.”
--Kofi Annan
Because you are a large part of the literacy
equation for children in Geneva. We will
make more progress increasing literacy if
we all work together.

The next phase of the
collective impact work
will be creating Action
Teams. These groups will
focus on outcomes and
indicators and will be
made up of a diverse
group of Geneva
representatives with an
interest and experience
in each area.

 What kind of programming do you offer that supports literacy?
(homework help, reading time, tutoring, book sharing, etc.)
 Where do you see need?
 What does your organization need?
 What data do you want to see
or wish you had?

Watch for next meeting in March.
This is your workgroup—your network—your work. The goal is to stay
focused, to be helpful and to increase literacy for our youth. If you have
comments or questions or concerns now or at any point, please share
them so we can work through them together. We are Geneva 2020—
together.
Thankyou!

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Introductions Who you are? What organization do you represent? What literacy role do you play in Geneva?
  • #6 We are not alone!
  • #12 The basic idea behind the image is that, in any community, all of the programs and organizations are working diligently to have their work moving in a positive direction. But with a collective impact model in place, all of the participating programs and organizations use the same data and continuous improvement practices and work together to achieve real, tangible change in their community. Working separately but in concert towards the same outcomes, the work becomes far more impactful, engaging and sustainable.
