In comparison with other nations, faith in ten United States has a very high adherence level. In accordance with the first amendment if the united states constitution, the government should not interfere with religious practices in any way. Religion should be free to exercise irrespective of any underlying circumstances. In contrast with other developed nations, religion has become a crucial aspect in the lives of Americans. It has helped them to make logical decisions as well as considerations in their life (Barber, N. (2012). To add to this religious diversity, the United States has both imported religion as well as indigenous faiths. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the two core parties differed along ethnic as well as religious grounds. The northern inhabitants were both the Protestants, Whigs, or republicans, while in the south, most of the Democrats were Catholics. Since we have already covered a fair amount, this will be brief—and not “Frasier brief.” ( (Those of you familiar with that sitcom, even though a few years in the past, will understand my meaning there…) I will not introduce new material here, but we’ll take a look back at where we’ve been as well as a few words about where we’re going from here.
During this class, we’ve taken a look at what the sociology of religion is as well as several theoretical perspectives that come into play as we examine it. We have examined how we know what we know, as well as the importance of examining religion from a scientific perspective and Rational Choice theory. We have discussed religion as a group experience, paying special attention to group processes, socialization, the church-sect typology, religious conflict, and other key concepts; we have also examined how politics, fundamentalism, social class and economic concerns relate to religion. We have also read about the intersection of race and gender (including sexuality) with religion, and considered the present state and possible future of religion in America, including the development of the Protestant megachurch. In lesson six the most interesting module that I read was the one about the current issues in marriage of families and their religions. In addition to this, I enjoyed learning about the module about the good, bad and ugly in terms of religions’ social aspects. To understand the philosophy of religion properly, this two aspect need to be studied in depth and the relationship between them understood. This paper is therefore written to help in understanding this relationship between the religion and family and the social aspects of religion as indicated in the modules six as well as the further readings given in class. **More content relating to final 2 requirements***

Despite this fact and the fact that the United States still engages in some religion based practices including the use of a bible when taking oath or the using the motto, “In God We Trust,” the U.S. Constitution gives the American people the freedom and the right to follow the religion of their choice ("First Amendment"). Having that said, it is important to fully understand the terms secular and secularization to recognize the direction American society is being driven. Simply defined, secular is a term to describe something such as an organization that has a non-religious or non-spiritual nature. It also suggests that a group is controlled by a government rather than a church ("Secular"). Becoming a secular society requires the process of secularization at which religion starts taking the “backseat” in a culture or society (“Secularization”).
There has been some attention on America’s transformation in becoming a more secular society. According to the Pew Research Center, there has been a shift in those who belong to a religion. In fact, there is a great division. Fewer belong to a religious group and those that do, are becoming more involved in their religion. There are three changes that are believed to have been causing this shift. These three changes can be identified as the following: Christians are losing the majority, Christians have lost religious privilege, and Christians are becoming more concretely identified.
Christian faith is no longer the “home-field” of America. Where many could assume a fellow American’s faith was in Christianity, it becomes less likely the case as years pass. In the past, people could share religious views and were only further influenced into Christianity. Now, people raised in non-religious homes are more open and susceptible to other ideas and focus.
Next, many Christian based traditions or practices are not being recognized as once before. Although this seems rather trivial, personal focus, gain, and advantage are increasing as Wednesday nights and Sundays are no longer isolated for religious practices. Stores began to open on the Lord’s day and personal events began to take place on Wednesday nights that were often reserved for prayer and worship.
Finally, the Christian faith is more defined. When mentioning the faith is more defined, I am suggesting that one no longer classifies as a Christian based off of what one said they believed, but now it has shifted to more of a measure of involvement. Those that do not belong to a church or choose to worship at home are less involved with those that are highly involved causing a greater margin between the two. As time and trend continue, se.

Social workers work with populations of people with different beliefs spiritually and religiously. As social workers we must learn to respect someone else’s values and beliefs. We also need to learn that people’s different values and beliefs influence their behaviors and interactions with people. We need to make sure that we respect other beliefs and not act on our own personal beliefs when working with clients. We need to be mindful of other cultures and their beliefs on such things like abortion and the roles of women. As a social worker I may believe personally that a woman should have the right to abort a baby but my client may believe abortions are not an option and may go against their religious beliefs. We must be mindful not to force our views on them. Another example would be in certain cultures they believe that the man is the head of the household and all communication and decisions will be made through the man. As the social worker we must honor that and not disrespect that by doing the opposite of what they believe just because its “normal or right” to us.
Explain one way your own spirituality or religious convictions might support your work with a client, and one barrier it might present.
As a social worker I must put my bias to the side and not let it get in the way of my professionalism. As a Christian I should not judge others this would be key in social work practice. This belief would remind me to stay open minded about others and why they may behave they way they do. A barrier would be me being judgmental and continuously bringing up my beliefs, forcing it on them and not respecting them. This is wrong and could cause a client to not feel comfortable or respected.

In lesson six the most interesting module that I read was the one about the current issues in marriage of families and their religions. To begin with, the first reading that interested me considers the connection between religion, and family development designs. The family development examples of individuals from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with its solid family-focused philosophy, were contrasted and those of Roman Catholics, Protestants (partitioned into liberal and moderate gatherings), and individuals with no religious inclination (Jordan, 2015). Having that said, it is important to fully understand the terms secular and secularization to recognize the direction American society is being driven. Simply defined, secular is a term to describe something such as an organization that has a non-religious or non-spiritual nature. It also suggests that a group is controlled by a government rather than a church ("Secular"). Becoming a secular society requires the process of secularization at which religion starts taking the “backseat” in a culture or society (“Secularization”).
There has been some attention on America’s transformation in becoming a more secular society. According to the Pew Research Center, there has been a shift in those who belong to a religion. In fact, there is a great division. Fewer belong to a religious group and those that do, are becoming more involved in their religion. There are three changes that are believed to have been causing this shift. These three changes can be identified as the following: Christians are losing the majority, Christians have lost religious privilege, and Christians are becoming more concretely identified.
Christian faith is no longer the “home-field” of America. Where many could assume a fellow American’s faith was in Christianity, it becomes less likely the case as years pass. In the past, people could share religious views and were only further influenced into Christianity. Now, people raised in non-religious homes are more open and susceptible to other ideas and focus.
Next, many Christian based traditions or practices are not being recognized as once before. Although this seems rather trivial, personal focus, gain, and advantage are increasing as Wednesday nights and Sundays are no longer isolated for religious practices. Stores began to open on the Lord’s day and personal events began to take place on Wednesday nights that were often reserved for prayer and worship.
Finally, the Christian faith is more defined. When mentioning the faith is more defined, I am suggesting that one no longer classifies as a Christian based off of what one said they believed, but now it has shifted to more of a measure of involvement. Social workers work with populations of people with different beliefs spiritually and religiously. As social workers we must learn to respect someone else’s values and beliefs. We also need to learn that people’s different values and beliefs influence their behaviors and interactions with people. We need to make sure that we respect other beliefs and not act on our own personal beliefs when working with clients. We need to be mindful of other cultures and their beliefs on such things like abortion and the roles of women. As a social worker I may believe personally that a woman should have the right to abort a baby but my client may believe abortions are not an option and may go against their religious beliefs. We must be mindful not to force our views on them. Another example would be in certain cultures they believe that the man is the head of the household and all communication and decisions will be made through the man. As the social worker we must honor that and not disrespect that by doing the opposite of what they believe just because its “normal or right” to us.

As a social worker I must put my bias to the side and not let it get in the way of my professionalism. As a Christian I should not judge others this would be key in social work practice. This belief would remind me to stay open minded about others and why they may behave they way they do. A barrier would be me being judgmental and continuously bringing up my beliefs, forcing it on them and not respecting them. This is wrong and could cause a client to not feel comfortable or respected.

In the lecture for module 5 we learned that a communication disorder is “an impairment in the ability to receive, send, process, and comprehend concepts, or verbal, nonverbal, and graphic symbol systems” (“Foundations for Understanding Special Education: Defining Special Education and the Impact of Cultural Diversity of Special Education Grand Canyon University,” 2010). Learning disabilities are determined by examining the discrepancy between standardized achievement scores and academic performance in a given academic area. Many students with learning disabilities have difficulty processing information, much like students with communication disorders. Many students with communication disorders have difficulty learning academic content and exhibit problems with receptive and/or expressive language.
