Linda Oestreich gave a presentation on information design. She began by introducing herself and her background in technical communication. She then outlined the topics she would cover, including definitions of information design, key leaders in the field, creating personas, applying design principles like contrast and repetition, using typography and color effectively, and before and after examples. Some of the main principles she discussed were Edward Tufte's ideas of macro/micro design and layering information. She also covered the C-R-A-P principles of contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. The goal of information design, she stated, is to clearly communicate messages to users.

One of the strengths of DITA architecture is the separation of presentation from content. When focusing on the content model, it is easy to forget about how it looks to the end user.
Together with Chris Patterson, an information developer with Creative and Technical Communications at Xerox, we discuss factors affecting the usability of technical publications and how research, experience, and DITA structure influence format decisions.
Desktop publishing allows users to combine text and graphics to produce publications. It builds on word processing skills and uses software like Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, and Microsoft Publisher. Key aspects of desktop publishing include setting up pages, columns, margins and master pages. Users can also customize fonts, colors, and paragraph styles. Documents are created by selecting templates, arranging text and images, and manipulating type through techniques like kerning and leading. Desktop publishing is important as it enhances visual communication and streamlines information dissemination.
This document outlines the criteria and requirements for a media production blog assignment. Students must post evidence of their research, planning, and design work for a local newspaper to their blog. There are three grading criteria related to blog presentation: ease of browsing, organization of posted content, and communication skills. Students must complete research on conventions of local newspapers, target audiences, ownership of local papers, and potential stories. They must design sketches of newspaper pages and plans for additional promotional materials. All evidence must be posted to the blog by deadlines.

1. Visual identity graphic design
A brand is a relationship between a business or organization and its audience. A brand identity is how the organization communicates its personality, tone and essence, as well as memories, emotions and experiences. Visual identity graphic design is exactly that: the visual elements of brand identity that act as the face of a brand to communicate those intangible qualities through images, shapes and color.

Designers that specialize in visual identity graphic design collaborate with brand stakeholders to create assets like logos, typography, color palettes and image libraries that represent a brand’s personality. In addition to the standard business cards and corporate stationary, designers often develop a set of visual brand guidelines (style guides) that describe best practices and provide examples of visual branding applied across various media. These guidelines help to ensure brand consistency throughout future applications.

Visual identity design is one of the most common types of design. Visual identity graphic designers must possess a general knowledge of all types of graphic design in order to create design elements that are suitable across all visual media. They also need excellent communication, conceptual and creative skills, and a passion for researching industries, organizations, trends and competitors.
2. Marketing & advertising graphic design
When most people think of graphic design, they think of designs created for marketing and advertising.

Key aspects of design like legibility, visual contrast, figure-ground organization, and hierarchical structure are explained. The document concludes with discussions of map layout conventions and factors that influence effective design.
The document provides an overview of a self-publishing workshop covering topics such as the pros and cons of digital self-publishing, project planning, book design and formatting, file types and management, and working with print-on-demand publishers. Attendees are instructed on organizing their files and project materials and given tips for naming files, creating a folder structure, and backing up their work.
Sparklines are very small line charts without axes that show the general shape of variation in a measurement over time. They display current and historical data in a small space to provide context. Small multiples are repeated presentations of different data with the same design that allow understanding to transfer between them. While pie charts are popular, they are a poor presentation method because it is difficult to judge sizes and relate segments without labels. Layout is the process of arranging material on a page and should follow the function and needs of the user.

Abstract
The Digital Revolution has paved the way for the emergence
of the World Wide Web which makes for the easy access of
image and digital catalogs through web searches and thesauri.
It is apparent that through the cataloging process, files and
folders will be appropriately organized by interrelated terms.
This paper seeks to illustrate the different principles,
practices and agents of thesaurus design and construction.
3. Graphic Design Thesaurus 3
Graphic Design Definition
Graphic Design can be defined as a form of visual
communication. Visuals, text, illustrations, art and typography
are all components that can make up graphic design.
Meggs (1998) stated that graphic design has been defined
as the visual message from prehistory through the medieval era
(pp1). This statement holds true to this day.
Target Audience
The Graphic Design Thesaurus will serve as an information
retrieval thesaurus constructed for students and practitioners
of graphic design and related fields.
Graphic Design Thesaurus Overview
Roe, Sandra K. and Thomas Alan R. (2004) note that
a thesaurus is a dynamic part of an organization’s information
and knowledge management system (pp 70).
The Library of Congress http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/tgm1
is a just one example of a thesaurus that will serve as a
point of reference for this assignment. The core of this
thesaurus is a list of approximately 150 preferred graphic design
terms that have been selected and arranged in alphabetical
and hierarchal order for use in indexing, cataloging,
classification and other applications.

Conclusion
This Graphic Design Thesaurus contains a listing of
150 graphic design, digital and printing terms. While all of the
terms in this industry were not covered, the end user will gain
a basic understanding of graphic design by accessing this
simple thesaurus.
Prior to taking this course I had no idea how effectively
thesauri worked. Even though this was a great exercise in
patience as well, I was happy that I was able to experience
what in reality, is now a part of my profession.
The information that was retrieved also provided me with
a great amount of knowledge and useful information.
Will (2004) confirms that by adapting Ranganathan’s fifth
“Law of Library Science” it has become clear that “A thesaurus
is a growing organism,” and as a result it is an important aspect
of information management (pp 76).
