LinkedIn –
"What is that... "
Larry New
Senior Network
Engineer
A little about me…
 I do networking for a living
 I love what I do!
 I design, build, and support networks. I
work on the routers and switches and
equipment that let your computers talk to
other computers or servers at work and
on the Internet.
 One of my friends has told me…
“Larry you know networking, but you do
not know how to network.”
Today’s Topic is LinkedIn…
 Can anyone tell me, what is the most
effective way to find a job?
Networking!
 What is networking?
Networking is talking to everyone.
 Networking is telling "everyone you
know" and "everyone you meet“ that
you are actively looking for work.
How Does Networking Work?
 Networking is based on the principle of "six
degrees" of separation, a theory that was
developed in the 1960’s.
 The idea is that every person on the planet is
“one step” away from each person they know
and “two steps” away from each person who is
known by the people that they know.
 With that, then everyone is an average of six
"steps" away from any other person on Earth.
Person A is connected to Person B… by only 6 people
Six Degrees of Separation
Tell Everyone
 If you tell someone you know that
you are looking, they will tell you
right away if they know of any job
situation that "fits you".
 They remember what you are
looking and when they hear or find
something that may fit you, they will
tell you o rdrop you an E-Mail.
Tools are important!
What are your typical tools?
 An address book – to manage
contact information
 A log - to manage calls to people
and companies
 The Internet - job searching and
information searching for or about
companies
"Are you on LinkedIn?“
 When I meet people, I often strike up a
conversation. As a part of the conversation,
typically I will ask them…
“Are you on LinkedIn?”
 "No, but I keep getting messages in my E-Mail
asking me to connect.“
 "Yes. I am on LinkedIn, but I have not done
much with it yet."
Tools are very important.
 The Lumberman Story…
 Just because you have the tool does
not mean you know how to use it!
 Networking is a tool, use it!
 Shake hands, talk to everyone you
meet and I mean EVERYONE!
 Talk to strangers!
(Mom said do not talk to strangers!)
“What is LinkedIn anyways?”
 Those who have/know kids have
heard of “MySpace” / “FaceBook”
 These are social networking tools.
 These are “web places” where
people, (younger people) connect
and share events from their lives.
 LinkedIn is a professional
networking tool
LinkedIn a Social Networking Tool
 LinkedIn is a social networking tool for
professional relationships.
 It can help you to keep and manage your
connections to your business contacts.
 This could be current or former… friends,
neighbors, co-workers, bosses, or people
from an organization where you were
once or are currently affiliated.
Our world is moving quickly
 In the past we had basically two methods of
connecting with other people…
U.S. Mail and the telephone
 Back then we were a fairly stable society, people
worked in or near the area code they grew up in.
 Imagine people working for the same company
for decades.
 Now the average is about 3 years, if that long.
 Now, we move from place to place.
 Even those staying where they grew up have
had at least one area code change!
Today…
 Almost everyone has one or more phone
numbers at home…
 Many people now have a personal cell
phone, an office phone and sometimes
they even have a company cell phone.
 Not to mention at least one E-Mail
address for home and at least one
company E-Mail address.
Lost Contacts!
 How can you possibly manage to keep
track of all of these numbers and
addresses for all the people you know.
 LinkedIn you can help you re-connect to
many of these people.
 I have found people through LinkedIn
that I lost track of in December of 2000.
 LinkedIn helps you manage that contact
information. People update their own
records there. You do not have to do it.
“What’s that noise?”
How can I use LinkedIn?
 You can find jobs through LinkedIn.
 You can find former associates on
LinkedIn.
 You can find Information about an
interviewer through LinkedIn.
Find a Job…
(Note: Some jobs are exclusively on LinkedIn)
Search by the type of work or specifics about your job.
1. Use keywords like accounting, marketing, aerospace, IT,
banking, or engineering, etc.)
2. Click you cursor into the box at the top right of the page.
3. Click the “pull-down” to the left of the box, set it to jobs.
4. Click the Search button.
5. The results will display for everyone on LinkedIn that matches
the name you typed. (typically a large number of names is
returned)
6. Press the “refine search results” button.
7. Type part of your job description into the “Keywords” field,
select the pull-down for sorted by “degrees away from you”
and then press search button.
8. There will be fewer names appear and they will be more
manageable. The names returned will be sorted with the
closest to you near the top.
Find former associates…
(Note: use their first name, last name or both)
1. Click you cursor in the box at the top right of the page.
2. Click the “pull down” and set it to people.
3. Click the Search button.
4. The results will display for everyone on LinkedIn that
matches the name you typed. (typically lots of names)
5. Press the “refine search results” button.
6. Type the name into the name field, select the pull-down
for sorted by “degrees away from you” and then press
search button.
7. The number of names should be more manageable and
the names returned will be sorted with the closest to
you (fewest number of degrees/hops) at the top.
Find Information about an
interviewer…
Search by that person’s name.
1. Click you cursor into the box at the top right of the page.
2. Click the “pull down” to the left of the box, set it to people.
3. Click the Search button.
4. The results will display for everyone on LinkedIn that matches the name you
typed. (typically lots of names is returned)
5. Press the “refine search results” button
6. Type the name into the name field, select the pull-down for sorted by “degrees
away from you”, enter the company name and then press search button.
7. The number of names should be more manageable and the names are sorted
with the closest to you at the top.
8. If they are in LinkedIn, their profile may be available to the public, if not you
may not see much about them. If it is public, then you can find out more about
them. Note if they are in any groups, or where they have worked in the past,
etc.
“Data Mining”
 Contact building. You can find people you
know in many ways within LinkedIn.
 You can search, like we discussed before,
by “name” or “name and company”
 You can look within the connections that
you have, for other people you know.
 Find your connections to a former great
boss or co-worker.
Invitations
 Invitations are “you asking” someone
you know to “join you” on LinkedIn.
 Invitations are a very useful part of the
“tools” you can use with LinkedIn.
 Add information that will “jog” memories.
 Remind your contact of “where they know
you from”, “how you met” or “how they
helped you in the past”.
Invitations – Part 2
 Invitations are the key part of
building your network.
 The more people you connect with
the greater exposure you have in
the world and within LinkedIn.
 The greater exposure, the greater
possibility of finding that “soft spot”
where you want to land.
Introductions
 This is how you get your name exposed
inside a company.
 There is someone you know that knows
someone at a company.
 Introductions are basically “you asking”
someone you know to “pass a message”
along for you.
 By “asking” your connection to forward an
introduction, you may have a “leg up” on
others who apply for that same job.
Introductions – Part 2
 How can I use introductions?
When asking about a opening status.
When asking for an informational Interview.
 Your resume was sent in via the Web portal and
submitted along with 300 or 400 others
 My resume was directly sent by E-Mail at their
request, connected to them by someone that
knows them.
 Which one might get a better look?
Some people may say…
 But I am working now, why should I
create, build or enhance my
network?
 The answer is in the title of a book
by Harvey Mackay…
“Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty”
Recommendations
 These are a wonderful thing. They
reinforce what your resume or
profile says you have been able to
do.
 Give them freely, and truthfully!
 Accept them gratefully.
 Do NOT Play Ping-Pong!
The toughest job in the
world is finding a job!
The most important job in the
world is finding a job!
Hopefully, this helps you…
just a little bit.
Hopefully you can explore it…
just a little bit.
Hopefully you will share it…
just a little bit!
By working together we will all find
what we need!
Final Thoughts…

Linked In1

  • 1. LinkedIn – "What is that... " Larry New Senior Network Engineer
  • 2. A little about me…  I do networking for a living  I love what I do!  I design, build, and support networks. I work on the routers and switches and equipment that let your computers talk to other computers or servers at work and on the Internet.  One of my friends has told me… “Larry you know networking, but you do not know how to network.”
  • 3. Today’s Topic is LinkedIn…  Can anyone tell me, what is the most effective way to find a job? Networking!  What is networking? Networking is talking to everyone.  Networking is telling "everyone you know" and "everyone you meet“ that you are actively looking for work.
  • 4. How Does Networking Work?  Networking is based on the principle of "six degrees" of separation, a theory that was developed in the 1960’s.  The idea is that every person on the planet is “one step” away from each person they know and “two steps” away from each person who is known by the people that they know.  With that, then everyone is an average of six "steps" away from any other person on Earth.
  • 5. Person A is connected to Person B… by only 6 people Six Degrees of Separation
  • 6. Tell Everyone  If you tell someone you know that you are looking, they will tell you right away if they know of any job situation that "fits you".  They remember what you are looking and when they hear or find something that may fit you, they will tell you o rdrop you an E-Mail.
  • 7. Tools are important! What are your typical tools?  An address book – to manage contact information  A log - to manage calls to people and companies  The Internet - job searching and information searching for or about companies
  • 8. "Are you on LinkedIn?“  When I meet people, I often strike up a conversation. As a part of the conversation, typically I will ask them… “Are you on LinkedIn?”  "No, but I keep getting messages in my E-Mail asking me to connect.“  "Yes. I am on LinkedIn, but I have not done much with it yet."
  • 9. Tools are very important.  The Lumberman Story…  Just because you have the tool does not mean you know how to use it!  Networking is a tool, use it!  Shake hands, talk to everyone you meet and I mean EVERYONE!  Talk to strangers! (Mom said do not talk to strangers!)
  • 10. “What is LinkedIn anyways?”  Those who have/know kids have heard of “MySpace” / “FaceBook”  These are social networking tools.  These are “web places” where people, (younger people) connect and share events from their lives.  LinkedIn is a professional networking tool
  • 11. LinkedIn a Social Networking Tool  LinkedIn is a social networking tool for professional relationships.  It can help you to keep and manage your connections to your business contacts.  This could be current or former… friends, neighbors, co-workers, bosses, or people from an organization where you were once or are currently affiliated.
  • 12. Our world is moving quickly  In the past we had basically two methods of connecting with other people… U.S. Mail and the telephone  Back then we were a fairly stable society, people worked in or near the area code they grew up in.  Imagine people working for the same company for decades.  Now the average is about 3 years, if that long.  Now, we move from place to place.  Even those staying where they grew up have had at least one area code change!
  • 13. Today…  Almost everyone has one or more phone numbers at home…  Many people now have a personal cell phone, an office phone and sometimes they even have a company cell phone.  Not to mention at least one E-Mail address for home and at least one company E-Mail address.
  • 14. Lost Contacts!  How can you possibly manage to keep track of all of these numbers and addresses for all the people you know.  LinkedIn you can help you re-connect to many of these people.  I have found people through LinkedIn that I lost track of in December of 2000.  LinkedIn helps you manage that contact information. People update their own records there. You do not have to do it.
  • 15. “What’s that noise?” How can I use LinkedIn?  You can find jobs through LinkedIn.  You can find former associates on LinkedIn.  You can find Information about an interviewer through LinkedIn.
  • 16. Find a Job… (Note: Some jobs are exclusively on LinkedIn) Search by the type of work or specifics about your job. 1. Use keywords like accounting, marketing, aerospace, IT, banking, or engineering, etc.) 2. Click you cursor into the box at the top right of the page. 3. Click the “pull-down” to the left of the box, set it to jobs. 4. Click the Search button. 5. The results will display for everyone on LinkedIn that matches the name you typed. (typically a large number of names is returned) 6. Press the “refine search results” button. 7. Type part of your job description into the “Keywords” field, select the pull-down for sorted by “degrees away from you” and then press search button. 8. There will be fewer names appear and they will be more manageable. The names returned will be sorted with the closest to you near the top.
  • 17. Find former associates… (Note: use their first name, last name or both) 1. Click you cursor in the box at the top right of the page. 2. Click the “pull down” and set it to people. 3. Click the Search button. 4. The results will display for everyone on LinkedIn that matches the name you typed. (typically lots of names) 5. Press the “refine search results” button. 6. Type the name into the name field, select the pull-down for sorted by “degrees away from you” and then press search button. 7. The number of names should be more manageable and the names returned will be sorted with the closest to you (fewest number of degrees/hops) at the top.
  • 18. Find Information about an interviewer… Search by that person’s name. 1. Click you cursor into the box at the top right of the page. 2. Click the “pull down” to the left of the box, set it to people. 3. Click the Search button. 4. The results will display for everyone on LinkedIn that matches the name you typed. (typically lots of names is returned) 5. Press the “refine search results” button 6. Type the name into the name field, select the pull-down for sorted by “degrees away from you”, enter the company name and then press search button. 7. The number of names should be more manageable and the names are sorted with the closest to you at the top. 8. If they are in LinkedIn, their profile may be available to the public, if not you may not see much about them. If it is public, then you can find out more about them. Note if they are in any groups, or where they have worked in the past, etc.
  • 19. “Data Mining”  Contact building. You can find people you know in many ways within LinkedIn.  You can search, like we discussed before, by “name” or “name and company”  You can look within the connections that you have, for other people you know.  Find your connections to a former great boss or co-worker.
  • 20. Invitations  Invitations are “you asking” someone you know to “join you” on LinkedIn.  Invitations are a very useful part of the “tools” you can use with LinkedIn.  Add information that will “jog” memories.  Remind your contact of “where they know you from”, “how you met” or “how they helped you in the past”.
  • 21. Invitations – Part 2  Invitations are the key part of building your network.  The more people you connect with the greater exposure you have in the world and within LinkedIn.  The greater exposure, the greater possibility of finding that “soft spot” where you want to land.
  • 22. Introductions  This is how you get your name exposed inside a company.  There is someone you know that knows someone at a company.  Introductions are basically “you asking” someone you know to “pass a message” along for you.  By “asking” your connection to forward an introduction, you may have a “leg up” on others who apply for that same job.
  • 23. Introductions – Part 2  How can I use introductions? When asking about a opening status. When asking for an informational Interview.  Your resume was sent in via the Web portal and submitted along with 300 or 400 others  My resume was directly sent by E-Mail at their request, connected to them by someone that knows them.  Which one might get a better look?
  • 24. Some people may say…  But I am working now, why should I create, build or enhance my network?  The answer is in the title of a book by Harvey Mackay… “Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty”
  • 25. Recommendations  These are a wonderful thing. They reinforce what your resume or profile says you have been able to do.  Give them freely, and truthfully!  Accept them gratefully.  Do NOT Play Ping-Pong!
  • 26. The toughest job in the world is finding a job! The most important job in the world is finding a job!
  • 27. Hopefully, this helps you… just a little bit. Hopefully you can explore it… just a little bit. Hopefully you will share it… just a little bit! By working together we will all find what we need! Final Thoughts…
