The Republican party nominates Abraham Lincoln for president in the 1860 election. Democrats could not agree on a unified platform regarding slavery and split their nomination between Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas and Southern Democrat John Breckinridge. Lincoln wins the election due to support in the North. In response, Southern states begin seceding from the Union, forming the Confederate States of America led by Jefferson Davis. Tensions rise as the North believes secession is unconstitutional while the South asserts their right to leave.
