3. • In 1882 shortly after his arrival in Madrid,
Rizal joined the Circulo Hispano-Filipino
(Hispano-Philippine Circle), a society of
Spaniards and Filipinos.
• Upon the request of the member of this
society, he wrote a poem entitled “Me Piden
Versos”
• New Year’s Eve reception of Madrid Filipinos
held in the evening of December 31, 1882.

a certain Señor Roses.
He was able to build a fair-

On November 20, 21 and 22 1884, the
serene city of Madrid exploded in bloody
riots by the students of the central University.

• Rizal completed his medical course in Spain.
• He was conferred the degree of licentiate in
Medicine by the Universidad Central de
Madrid on June 21, 1884
• The next academic year (1884-1885) he
studied and passed all subjects leading to

He composed a lovely poem on August 22, 1883 dedicated to her.
In this poem titled A La Señorita C. O y Perez (To Miss C. O. y P.)
He expressed his admiration for her. He found solace and joy in her company.
He was still engaged to Leonor Rivera
His friend and co-worker in the propaganda movement, Eduardo de Lete, was madly in love with Consuelo and he had no wish to break their friendship because of a pretty girl.
Upon the request of the member of this society, he wrote a poem entitled “Me Piden Versos” (They Ask Me For Verses)
Rizal was deeply affected by Beedcher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Eugene Sue’s The Wandering. These two books aroused his sympathy for the oppressed and unfortunate people.
