The Next Great Wall
The attacks of September 11, 2001 on the World Trade Center triggered the passing
of the USA Patriot Act to deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and
around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools, and for other
purposes. 1 It passed quickly and with little debate. Soon, encryption of information
became a topic to address and efforts took place to allow the government backdoor
access to anything encrypted by products developed within the United States. This
generated much controversy and was opposed by many organizations. It did not take
long before the supporters of these encryption bills backed down.

The 9/11 attacks slowed things down, and it did not take long for Congress to
respond. Two days after the attacks, Senator Judd Greggof New Hampshire stated the
need to get the information that allows (the government) to anticipate and prevent
what occurred and that encryption makers have as much at risk as we have at risk as
a nation and should understand that as a matter of citizenship, they have an
obligation to include decryption methods for government agents. 4 The effects of the
tragedy in Congress understandably took shape. One month later, the Patriot Act was
passed with overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate after the attacks (339
79 and 96 1 respectively).5 As stated in the introduction, one of the major topics of
the bill is to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools. The bill did not explicitly
contain any cryptography provisions, but it would not take long for that topic to be
addressed. With Gregg s intentions known and the Patriot Act taking effect,
supporters for encryption had to respond immediately.
One major supporter against these encryption proposals were co chairs Barbara

4. The Effects Of Different Types Of Carbon Taxes On The...
Introduction
This paper examines the effects of different types of carbon taxes on the market
share of different electricity generation technologies, particularly between renewable
and fossil fuel generators. The Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM) was used
for this analysis because it includes detailed representations of the technologies in the
electricity sector. Given a constraint on emissions or a certain carbon tax, GCAM
will determine the least cost methods of supplying energy in different sectors. We
found that the share of low carbon generation will increase as the carbon tax increases
and the share of renewables generally increases with the implementation of a carbon
tax. Additionally, the timing of renewable market share... Show more content on

GCAM is a dynamic recursive model that utilizes a solution algorithm that is based
on a market equilibrium. It consists of three core modules: a) Energy, b) Agriculture
and land use, and c) Model for Assessment of Greenhouse gas Induced Climate
Change (MAGICC). Regional population and labor productivity growth assumptions
drive the energy and land use systems employing numerous technology options
(JGCRI, n.d.). The GDP is a simple labor productivity model with an energy GDP
feedback elasticity (JGCRI, 2014). Technology change is modeled using an
autonomous energy efficiency index (AEEI) parameter.
The choice of generation mix of technologies in GCAM is based on a logit model,
which includes the relative cost, logit exponents, and share weights of each
technology. The logit approach controls the distribution of market share between
technologies or fuels in response to price changes as represented by equation (1).
(1) Share(i) =swi .Ci iswi .Ci where Ciis the cost of the ith technology, swiis the
share weight of ith technology and is the logit exponent. A high valued logit
exponent means that technology s market shares are more responsive to changes in
costs. The share weights are calibrated parameters based on the base
5. National Council Of State Board Of Nursing
According to the website of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing it
states, Because nursing care poses a risk of harm to the public if practiced by
professionals who are unprepared or incompetent, the state, through its police
powers, is required to protect its citizens from harm. This statement is very
significant because it simply states the basis of why there is a State Board of
Nursing, it is to regulate nursing practice. It is imperative that patients are
protected from harm and that the nurse practices within their scope of practice.
Due to the fact that there are governing agencies and legislation for nurses it
decreases the likelihood of incompetent care to be given. Nurses are educated to
provide safe and competent care and that is validated with a nursing license. If the
care given to patients is not safe there are consequences and these are enforced by
the State Board of Nursing. Additionally, nurses are professionals who implement
ethics, values, and goals. The American Nurses Association has deemed 2015 the
year of ethics due to the release of the revised code of ethics. This code of ethics
embraces nursing behaviors that should be incorporated in the quality care that is
given to patients from nurses. One of the ethical provisions is to maintain proper
boundaries between the nurse and the patient and/or family. In order to provide safe
care there needs to be professional boundaries between the nurse and the patient. If
the lines are blurred it

investigators are blindfolded perhaps to acknowledge the fact that the interrogators
are well known to Marlowe. The scene create suspense as the viewers are anxious to
know if at all Marlowe would be convicted or let free after providing information

different element as Marlowe flashbacks on previous happenings. The flashback is
intentional as it breaks the dull scene created by Marlowe and the interrogators.

Bridging the Gap: Developing Computational Models of PD Subtypes and
Progression Models for Clinical Research
Rationale and Impact:
Developing data science code for use in clinical research is limited. Computational
researchers either develop black box methods for general use or specific models to
answer a particular scientific question. Development of models into a useable clinical
research tool is unusual. Many codes are, at best, uploaded to a software repository
online, like GitHub. At this point, the computational researchers would usually move
on to the next project and the model would not have any clinical impact. While it is
likely that clinical researchers could benefit from these codes the development of the

A workshop that brings together computational scientists with expertise in
progression modeling and clinical researchers could lay the foundation to address
some of these problems to bridge the gap between clinical and computational
expectations to arrive at progression models that can be used in clinical research and
biomarker identification.
Workshop Goals:
Overall Goal: Determine challenges in developing a clinically meaningful model of
PD heterogeneity, subtypes, a progression model and the high level method for a
roadmap around these challenges
Goals:
Review Model Examples: Computational researchers will review examples of how
subtyping and progression modeling can be used in clinical research by
demonstrating current models at a high level. These short overviews will help to
frame the discussion around the design of a roadmap for how progression model is
done and can be integrated into clinical research.
Review Desired Outcomes: Clinical researchers will review how an understanding of
PD subtyping and progression will improve clinical research and how computational
progression models could be constructed to ensure that the clinical knowledge is
efficiently represented as model inputs and clinical
8. How Did The Spanish Armada Fail In 1588
In 1588, King Philip sent his Spanish Armada to invade England for many reasons.
Firstly, Francis Drake had previously been raiding treasure ships returning to Spain.
Secondly, Philip was a very strong Catholic. After Mary, the previous English queen
(who was Catholic) had been beheaded, Elizabeth came to the throne. Philip was
angry when he heard the news so he decided to bring Englandback to being Catholic.
Thirdly, The Dutch rebelled against the Spanish in 1568. This battle went on for over
one hundred years and Elizabeth supported the Dutch.
Due to these factors, King Philip of Spain attacked England however there were
many different reasons for the failure of The Armada in the Summer of 1588. This

For example according to a Spanish History Textbook, The Armada set out into the
Atlantic, but soon had some dreadful bad luck: A great storm damaged some of the
fleet and it had to go to Corunna for repairs. It also says, Our sailors were tricked
and our fleet sailed out into the open sea and scattered in the mist and fog.
Unfortunately a terrible wind from the south east beat down the waves. However
According to an English Textbook, The Armada was a failure. The Armada failed
because the English adopted a new method of fighting and the Spanish method of
fighting was too old fashioned to stand against it. This information is questionable
due to the fact that the Spanish say differently and that these textbooks could ve been

9. On Death And Dying By Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross
Terminal illness is an incurable disease that cannot be effectively treated and is
plausibly expected to result in the death of a person within a short period of time.
When someone is terminally ill, they are said to be actively dying. This brings about
an entire different set of emotional and mental states of mind. Dr. Elizabeth Kubler
Ross, a Swiss American psychiatrist and forerunner in near deathstudies, wrote a
book titled On Death and Dying where she explains that once someone knows death
is close at hand, they go through several distinct psychological stages in response.
After she studied hundreds of terminally ill patients and conducting interviews and
studies with them, she came up with five stages of psychological responses to dying.
They include in this order: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance....

Of course, these duties will vary depending on the nature of the illness, their
personality characteristics and environmental circumstances. Several psychologists
have referred to these duties as adaptive tasks. These duties include: arranging a
variety of affairs, such as funeral arrangements. They must adapt to the loss of both
loved ones and their own self. They may be concerned with the people that they will
leave behind. The terminally ill individual must manage their medical records while
balancing their emotions. Terminal illness causes them to have to plan for their
diminutive future such as anticipating the loss of sensory, motor and or cognitive
abilities. And lastly, the person must identify and cope with their death encounter. So

and played a key role. Under Woodrow Wilson we entered WW1 mainly because of
the sinking of Lusitania where 128 American citizens were killed and because of the
Zimmermann note. This note says that if Mexico fought against America and central
powers won then Mexico would acquire land from the U.S. However there was
evidence that indicated that the Lusitania was carrying contraband war goods to the

3.1.3.1. Serum proteins test
The main source of the serum proteins is the liver. Parenchymal cells are main cells
responsible for create of clotting factors, albumin, and fibrinogen.
Albumin is the most significant amount of protein in the plasma formation by the liver
and is a useful indicator of liver function, because the half life of the albumin in
serum is much than (20 days), and the level of serum albumin is not a reliable
indicator of protein synthesis in the liver in acute liver disease. The site of albumin
synthesis is only in the liver. In the patients sever from liver cirrhosis and ascites
usually have low serum level. The normal serum range (3.5g/dl 4.5 g/dl).
Serum albumin levels tend to be naturally occurring in diseases such as acute viral
hepatitis, liver and obstructive jaundice drug related poisoning.
Albumin levels that below (3g / dL) in hepatitis should be raise suspicion of the
chronic liver disease such as cirrhosis of the liver, which reflects to decreased
synthesis of albumin.
3.1.3.2.Prealbumin
The level of pre albumin is (from 0.2 to 0.3 g /L). In the liver disease the levels of
pre albumin decreased because decrease the synthesis. Due to it has short half life.
Pre albumin was considered useful to determine the drug that causes hepatotoxicity.

20. Self Reliance Is Beneficial Or Beneficial
An issue regarding thinking has been on the importance of self reliance, the notion
of relying on oneself for ideas and knowledge. Some people argue that self reliance
is harmful. From this perspective, self reliance generates bad thoughts and ideas, and
people should conform to society instead. However, others argue that self reliance is
extremely important for society. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a main proponent of this
view, says that To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in
your private heart is true for all men that is genius (1). According to this view,
relying on one s own ideas is genius, and it is much smarter to practice self reliance
rather than conform to society s ideas. In sum, then, the issue is whether self
reliance is beneficial or not beneficial. My view is that self reliance is beneficial.
Though I concede that at times it may be a good ideato agree with the majority, I still
maintain that one s own ideas are much better than those of the majority almost all
of the time. Although some people think that the majority opinion is usually correct,
I claim that the notion of self reliance is beneficial because individuals should rely
on their own knowledge gained from life experience to create new and better ideas,
which cause society to move forward and become better than it was before.
Self reliance is beneficial because individuals create ideas that are better compared to
those of the majority. Emerson explains the importance of

The Boy Code/ Culture of Cruelty The boy code creating a tough, protective man
and an emotionless secretive robot at the same time. Boys are tough to shut up and
suck it up. Never able to show emotion or they face retribution for being sensitive.
The boy code has been around for many generations, passed down from father to
son, like a family heirloom. It is cherished and use to make boys into men. As boys
grow up they are taught that it is not ok to cry and not to show any emotion unless he
is fighting for his manhood. Boys are raised with shame and a certain type of sadist
way. A father s responsibility to his son is to raise him to be a man. Sensitivity and
weakness is not allowed but, if he slips up and cries, he may be shamed and may
come to fear the repercussions. The things that a boy may hear are man up , quit
crying , quit being a sissy and unless you want a reason to cry you better shut up .
No a days instead of building them up males are treated like they must put their
emotions in a box, locked away and never used in any situation.
In school when a boy is viewed as weak or not manly enough, they are teased
verbally and physically. According to Michael Thompson, boys will attack one
another for anything that they think is not masculine . By definition masculine is 1.
Having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with men, especially strength
and aggressiveness. 2. The male sex or gender. Boys tend to like more violence and
aggressiveness.

spheres, (Noah, A., Weiss, A. S., 2010). As a result, journalism is not just in the
process of negotiating a shift to a digital media environment, but more
significantly to a networked one. (Hermida, A., 2012). As an increasing amount of
people have gained access to the internet, with incrementally faster paced
networks, it has found itself an exceedingly popular platform in which users have
the freedom to discuss topics of choice to an extensive and unlimited viewership.
Consumers of the news have adapted to forms of new media, such as online news,
blogs, social media sites, and microblogging sites such as Twitter, which not only
has the potential to give users content and information at unimaginably high speed,
but also the opportunity to share their own personal material. This allows for
everyone to become a journalist at a low (or free of) charge at an even faster speed
than traditional media organizations, therefore incorporating a grassroots dimension
to the media. Networked technologies such as Twitter provide a huge social
platform for audiences of the media to make a shift from their role as a consumer, to
having the potential in which to become producers . We are moving from a
traditional news cycle dominated by journalists and
23. Seismic Sixties
The Seismic Sixties The 1960s were an eventful, formal dresswear, and changing
time period. The baby boomers were coming to an end, men dressed very formally
and women wore dresses. Children were very respectful and normally had complied
with their parents wishes. One of the biggest movements in American history hit it s
apex in the sixties, the Civil rights movement. Technology had some huge advances in
the sixties with the production of cars, computers, and the beginning of the internet.
The ads of this time period are highly associated with social status and toward
household families. The advertisers use ethosand pathos abundantly and use logos to
successfully appeal to the general public to sell their products. The 1960swere a very
historical decade in America. With the Cuban Missile Crisis and John Fitzgerald
Kennedy being shot, Americans had a lot to cope with. In the fifties, cigarettes
became a huge fad, and the coming of the sixties did not slow that trend down at
all. Cigarettes gave people a way to just go outside (or even inside) and relax and
smoke. Other important past events were Martin Luther King Jr s I had a Dream
speech and the majority of the space race. Fashion wise, the 1960s brought out a lot
of colors when the people were not in full formal attire. For music, one of the main
impacts was singer, writer, and musician, Bob Dylan. Another aspect was the use sex
being portrayed in ads. Even though the seventies had used sex abundantly to sell, it
24. Historical Proof Of The Bible
Studying history is something that many people consider boring. However,
history allows us to look back in time and see from where we came and why we
practice the things we do. In addition, history serves as a powerful proof of the
Bible s accuracy. Any time an historical event is mentioned in the Bible, the details
are confirmed by ancient literature or archaeological findings. But we are led to the
same question we proposed in the last two segments: how do we prove it? A brief
examination of historical evidence will show us that the Bibleis an authoritative
source for such information. The most important aspect of historical proof for the
Bible is the existence of Jesus. It is sometimes thought that Jesus never actually
existed, and that
25. Greek Amphitheaters
A man strolls down a barren road, his eye catches a glimpse of a majestic column.
While approaching the grand column, he is amazed by its architectural beauty. The
stone is carved into remarkable designs. Mighty aqueducts hover over him sending
chills down his spine. The roar of the crowd in the nearby theater startles him from his
peaceful stroll. Those architecture elements can be found all around our world today.
Greek architecture has dramatically influenced modern day architecture by the use of
columns, theaters, and public structures.
Greek architects invented several different styles of columns; the simplest column,
called the Doric column, is used throughout architecture today. In the Doric Order, the

Hygiene was of high importance to the Greeks so their communities provided public
bath houses. Aqueducts provided the water to the public baths, the baths were
heated and cooled, dirty water was replaced with clean water, and exercise and
massage rooms were available (Wesley). Modern day bathhouses which we refer to
as spas are really similar to Ancient Greece bathhouses. Spas today provide a variety
of different styles of baths, exercise rooms, and message therapy (Wesley).
Bathhouses have been in the world throughout the ages. Greek bathhouses continue to
influence us to this day. Modern day architecture has been immensely influenced by
the use of public structures, theaters, and columns once developed by the Greeks. The
influence of Greek architecture has made the impossible possible, throughout our
world today. As the man awakes from his daydream his is amazed by the impressive
architectural elements. The elements in his dream are scattered throughout society
today. The majestic columns, mighty aqueducts, and roaring theaters in within blocks

26. The Malthusian Population Theory
Introduction In 1798, Thomas Malthus wrote an essay about population growth that
reflects a pessimistic view to future economic development. This essay was a result
of his discussion with positivists that tend to praise perfectibility of the man and
knowledge diffusion as a source of prosperity for future generations. Malthus essay
about populationgrowth based on observing 17th and 18th century US population
data. The general idea of the essay that when food is enough, population grows at a
geometric rate and food production just arithmetically. (Malthusian and Neo
Malthusian Theories/ Ran Abramitzky and Fabio Braggion, 2003) Essay, An Essay
on the Principle of Population, is an excellent example of mathematical modeling.
The Malthus model was a surprisingly good for prediction of population growthover
short time intervals, but as it was discovered later, it does not work for long time
intervals.
This paper has the following structure: the first chapter Model description contains
general assumptions that were made for the model. In the chapter, Model
Composition the formula of the Malthusian population growth model introduced and
the production function will be defined. In the third chapter, the Low of Diminish

On one hand, the model conflicts with the fact that in modern economics, per capita
incomes exhibit a tendency to growth over time. On the other hand its prediction
regarding the relationship between population growth and per capita income no

general role in the society development. Nonetheless, as it was shown in the chapter
Empirical Support for the Malthusian Theory it is quite precisely describes tendencies
that characterized dynamics in humans population growth before the industrial
revolution and it still works for short term
27. Religious Influence In Presidential Elections
With the United States gearing up for the 2016 presidential election, I was curious
to find out how our religion may affect voting. Considering the decline of people
claiming a religious belief or claiming to be non believers I was interested to read
this article. I was intrigued to find out that many people still want a president who
has some type of strong religious belief. Yet this year, both Hillary Clinton and
Donald Trump are considered by some not to be religious at all. This article is
interesting in that it states people would rather see someone do drugs, such as
marijuana or even cheat on their spouse rather than elect someone who claims to be
Atheist, or denies a belief in God. So what people are basically saying is they would...

While the survey showed that losing our religion s influence is in fact a bad thing for
our society. I would be interested in learning which age group influenced the good
or the bad feeling. I feel like candidates today base their speeches off the wants and
needs of the American people at the time. If Americans want to hear more about
the candidates religious ties or affiliation and how that will influence their political
decisions it will be delivered. If Americans want to hear less about religion they
too will oblige. Politics is a funny game. In order to stay with the majority, they
have to give the people what they want to hear. I think American s view the
importance of religious beliefs in their presidential candidate highly. Their beliefs
can ultimately affect the policies and laws they put into place during their time in
office. Most of the hot topic issues in politics that are discussed today such as gay
marriage, abortion, the death penalty, war on terror, can be viewed differently by
people of various religious backgrounds. Therefore, I fell many people seek the faith
of who they vote for to align more closely with their own personal and spiritual
28. Religion In Fight Club
Fight Club is a movie based on the book of the same name written by Chuck
Palahniuk. It was released in 1999 as a film directed by David Fincher. The film,
when first shown in theaters, did poorly falling well short of what 20th Century
Fox s expectations were. The major problem that the film had was its negativity
toward women with such lines as, we are a generation of men raised by women ,
as well as its portrayal of the film s leading female character Marla Singer who is
seemingly the root of all the nameless main character s problems. By contrast in the
movie are told to take back their masculinity and fight. After the film s release to

In many circles of Buddhism, they do not see themselves as religious but instead a
philosophy with no belief in a god or high power. Rather a higher understanding
called nirvana. The Buddhist tradition of nirvana is described as the extinguishing of
the fires that cause suffering. These fires are typically identified as the fires of
attachment, aversion, and ignorance. Once again in this belief we see the idea of
letting go and becoming more aware about the self. There are many types of
enlightenment in Buddhism but the most prevalent is nirvana and the release from
rebirth cycles. Where there is nothing; where naught is grasped, there is the Isle of
No Beyond. Nirvana do I call it the utter extinction of aging and dying. There is that
dimension where there is neither earth, nor water, nor fire, nor wind; neither
dimension of the infinitude of space, nor dimension of the infinitude of
consciousness, nor dimension of nothingness, nor dimension of neither perception
nor non perception; neither this world, nor the next world, nor sun, nor moon. And
there, I say, there is neither coming, nor going, nor stasis; neither passing away nor
arising: without stance, without foundation, without support. This, just this, is the
end of stress. (Sakya 48) So what does any of this have to do with the story in Fight
Club? In the beginning of the story our nameless protagonist is suffering from
insomnia. Three weeks and I hadn t slept. Three weeks

Problematic Issues Caused by Acid Rain
Acid rain has been problematic to the earth s environment for many years in North
America. What is Acid Rain? What causes Acid Rain? How is Acid Rain damageable
to the Earths soil? Acid Rain is rain that contains a high concentration of pollutants,
chiefly sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, released into the earth s atmosphere by
the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil. (Definition.com) Acid Rain has been
known to cause damage to vegetation and soils, animals and humans. There are two

Most cities have a law emission test requirement for vehicles that reside in the city.
Rural areas, such as where I live, do not require an emissions test. I believe that
every vehicle that is sold to consumers, it is tested before it is sold. Meanwhile,
buses in New Mexico are using natural gas to transport people; it burns clear and
regular gas is dirty. Automobile designers have invented electric cars that do not

you imagine what our environment would look like? In modern day society, acid
rain has affected vegetations, waters, rocks and animals in various types of
environments. Acid rain is very common in forest types of environments and lakes
due to the wind. The wind carries toxins of sulfur dioxide into the clouds where the
clouds create either rain or smog. When the ground/soil is affected by sulfur
dioxide, it becomes rotted and the acid rain kills all types of vegetation. Animals
living in this environment loose some sort of food and become poisoned. For
example, fish that live in the waters of lakes are harmed by acid rain where the pH
levels become abnormal. When the forests are destroyed, the living creatures and
animals will not be able to find any source of food; the wild grass is one source of

Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame
To some, including myself, baseball is the greatest sport that has ever been played.
It is a game played by two opposing teams made of multiple players, but only nine
players per team play at the same time. To be part of one of the thirty teams that get
to play professional baseball, a player has to play the game extremely well
(www.baseballhalloffame.com). When a player plays the game better than most
have played he gets rewarded, usually with lots of money in a big contract. Then

He did not report cash money he accepted for signing baseballs and photographs at
baseball card shows (Reston 1997). It is still to this day not proven that Rose did bet
on the baseball team that he was managing. Rose himself still holds true to his
statement that he never bet on the game of baseball. Evidence is minimal and it
has been over ten years, yet he is still ineligible to be voted into the Hall of Fame.
If it was left up to his statistics, he should have been inducted years ago. There are a
handful of the 244 elites that are in the Hall of Fame that did far worse things than
gamble on the game of baseball or evade paying their taxes. For instance, the
beloved Ty Cobb was a horrible racist and once admitted killing a man. One day
while walking in Detroit, he stepped in freshly poured asphalt. Then a construction
worker, named Fred Collins, who just happened to be black, yelled at him. Cobb
responded by slapping Collins to the ground. Cobb was found guilty by the courts,
and received a suspended sentence. Collins filed a civil suit, but settled out of court
for $75. Ty Cobb had to deal with the law in one form or another many different
times for striking black men (www.totalbaseball.com). The powers that run the
baseball organization seem to turn their eyes, quite conveniently, away from any
number of wife beaters, and drug addict s everyday. They let known, proven criminals
32. Religious Factors Have A Great Deal Of Influence On...
Religious factors have had a great deal of influence on politics in Latin American
countries. In most countries religion has helped to set the value structure of their
society by helping to frame what the citizens should expect out of their lives and what
they should expect from the government. Today here are a variety of religions
practiced in Latin America including Catholicism, Protestantism, Voodoo, SanterГ
a,
Judaism, as well as indigenous religions. In order to combat religion s influence on
Latin American politics the anti clericalismmovement began in colonial times. Anti
clericalism is defined as the opposition to the clergy for its real or alleged influence in
both political and social affairs (Britannica, 2009). It should be noted that although
anti clericalism is often associated with anti Catholicism, anti Christianity, anti deism,
irreligiosity, and atheism they are not the same. Butler (2009) noted that we could
hold the Catholic responsible for encouraging the association between anti
clericalism and anti Catholicism to their followers. Secularism is also often
associated with anti clericalism, which rejects all forms of religion in civil affairs.
Fallaw (2009) notes that it is hard to tell where anti clericalism and secularism
began and end. According to Bantjes, 2009 anti clericalism s target was the
privileged status of a clerical caste who are viewed as hypocritical and immoral.
Historically religion and politics have been intertwined in government in

Ancient Egyptians had a history that flourished for three thousand years before fading
from existence around the time existence around the time of the roman invasion.
They created a culture so rich and diverse, that its influence still affects today s
western world. The ancient Egyptians were polytheistic in nature and the rich
polytheistic culture and rituals shaped their daily life, art, religious beliefs, funerary
practices and kingship. The ancient Egyptian religionis centered on deities and
overtime, their religious belief which influenced their whole existence changed based
on the rise and fall of important gods in control of the forces and elements of nature.
The Egyptian religion was shaped by the polytheistic view of the universe. A belief in
polytheism determined the belief in gods, death and magic. This essay focuses on the
religious practices while also drawing a comparison with the Christian religion which
has monotheistic view of the world.
Every empire has a creation story, narrating the origin of the universe and the creation
of humanity. For Christians, according to Genesis, heavens and the earth was created
by God out of darkness. God alone created all that was good in seven days and on
the last day he created man. From Man he created Woman, who went forth to
multiply and populate the earth. On the other hand, Egyptians as a result of their
polytheistic nature possessed many creation stories based on the cult of the god in
Egypt. There often were myths

hardships both the mother and daughters go through in order to please the other.
Also, it shows the troubles the daughters face when growing up in two cultures. This
book reveals that most of the time mothers really do know best.
In Rules of the Game we see a mother daughter conflict. Waverly s mother is always

being exploited by her own mother because she was raised in a society with more
American influence than Chinese. In a Chinese society a woman s social standing is

what her mother had told her. She remembers how her mother left her babies

thought that she was trying to make her become a child prodigy like Waverly, but
her mother did this because she knew it would benefit June for the rest of her life.
Because of the death of her mother, June was forced to take the place of her mother
in more than just filling her place at the Maj Jong table. The mother daughter
tradition was broken because the lost babies were found after the death of their
mother. June s trip to China can be seen as the completion of her mother s promise to
return, honoring her sisters by attempting to transfer what she had absorbed from her
mother and her tradition.
And I think, My mother is right. I am becoming Chinese (Tan 306). This is what June

June with American, her mother with Chinese. This has kept the mother daughter
tradition alive but has also weakened it. This happens often, but there is always
something that sticks and is passed down from generation from generation.

had its own advantages as well as many more disadvantages. For instance, one of the
main problems and disadvantage they had was the fact that Germany didn t have

In general Germany before industrialization wasn t as independent of its self as it got

Industrialization is basically when the economy of a specific place or state
transforms from a primarily based on agriculture economy to a one of manufacturing
goods just as in the case of Germany. Germany s industrialization up until today doesn
t have a specific date of when it began, though it has been estimated that according to

other countries such as England. In which through industrialization, they had the

where it has become a major cultural and political force in Jamaica. During its
existence, the movement has challenged Jamaica s neo colonialist society s attempts
to keep whites at the top and blacks at the bottom of the socio economic structure.
Because of its controversial actions, the movement has evoked responses from
observers that range from hostility to curiosity (Forsythe 63). On one hand,
Rastafarians have been criticized because of their belief that Haile Selassie, the
former emperor of Ethiopia, is God and that marijuana (ganja) should be used as a

There are several possible explanations for the rapid growth of Rastafari. One major
factor in its expansion was the emergence in the late 1960s of reggae music, a
derivative of American rhythm and blues and Jamaican ska. Reggae helped spread
the philosophy of Rastafari to the wider Jamaican audience and the world. During
that period of time, Bob Marley and the Wailers were the principal popularizers of
reggae. Before Marley s death in 1981, the Wailers, with albums like Burnin (1973)
and Survival (1979), articulated a message of liberation and redemption which had
the power to transform a world of injustice and war into one of peace and love (Reid
172). By 1986, the Wailers ten albums had sold more than 20 million copies
(Jennings 69).
Marley and his music were significant forces in the increased popularity of the
movement. Barrett felt that the growth of the movement was largely due to the
charismatic personality of Robert Nesta Marley (213). Davis and Simon proposed
that the Wailers music had thrust the Rasta cosmology into the middle of the planet s
cultural arenas, and suddenly people [wanted] to know what all the chanting and
praying and obsessive smoking of herb [were] all about (Reggae Bloodlines 63).
Because Marley s music was such a powerful force in the rise of the Rastafarian
movement, there are many popular and scholarly writings which focus on Marley and
his music. An
39. Effects Of The Great Depression On Society
The Great Depression occurred between the years 1929 and 1939 in America. The
Great Depression was the longest lasting economic downfall in America s history.
During the Great Depression there were approximately 15,000,000 unemployed
Americans, which was about one quarter of America s entire workforce. The effects
that the Great Depressionhad on society where so massive that these effects can still
be felt today. The causes of the Great Depression can be linked back to economic
problems within America during the late 1920s, specifically installment buying
and buying stocks on the margin which ended up bankrupting many homeowners
and investors; as the stock market crashed in the year 1929. Following the stock
market crash, arose bank failures, factory closings, and widespread
unemployment. The stock market crash of 1929 occurred on a Tuesday and so
this day was coined as Black Tuesday . The stock market crash on Black Tuesday is
considered by most to be the main cause of the Great Depression. However, there
are many more factors to be considered before autonomous fault can be assigned to
the 1929 stock market crash. Herbert Hooverwas President during the 1929 stock
market crash and beginning of the Great Depression. Herbert Hoover did not
acknowledge the extreme depth of the crisis and assumed that America would quickly
recover on its own, bringing the nation out of the disaster without the need for any
federal intervention. Unfortunately, Pres. Herbert
40. Knight
The Green Knight s Identity Crisis
Many, if not all, stories follow the Monomyth formula for character archetypes
which resonates the challenges and plot of a typical hero story (Campbell 2). This
formula always involves a hero, devil figure (or main villain/nemesis), a call to
adventure, and an ultimate boon; However, some characters may fall under more
than one archetype in a single story. One character can share the archetypes of both a
mentor and hermit, or they could share those of the threshold guardian, creature of
nightmare and minion all at the same time. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
dramatically demonstrates how a single character can play many archetypal roles.
In the beginning of the work, the knights of the round table and King Arthur are
celebrating the New Years. This, going by the Hero s Quest archetype, is
represented as the common day world or the threatened community. This
celebration is then interrupted by an unsettling presence; the Green Knight. It is at
this point the uninvited guest calls for a challenge, If anyone from this hall holds
himself so hardy, so bold both of brain and blood, as to dare strike me one stroke
for another, I will give him as a gift this ax, which is heavy enough, in sooth, to
handle as he may list, and I will abide the first blow, unarmed as I sit. ,which is
interpreted as the call to adventure (Weston #). The mentor figure, in which King
Arthur fits into, accepts the challenge, only to be interrupted by Sir Gawain, Arthur
s nephew; the story s hero. Gawain accepts the challenge and cuts the Knight s
head off. However, he picks it back up and tells him he will see him next year. It is
at this point that the Green Knight can be seen as the Herald and the Creature of
Nightmare for Gawain at the same time, since he now has an entire year of
anticipation for his beheading by the Knight. However, it isn t until the near

diesel fuel, gasoline, jet fuel, liquid petroleumgas, fuel oil, specialty lubricant products

HollyFrontier compete with a broad range of refining companies, including
multinational oil companies including Valero Energy Corporation, Marathon
Petroleum Corporation, Philips 66 Company, Chevron Corporation, Royal Dutch
Shell Corporation, Tesoro Corporation, BP Corporation, and the biggest competitor
Exxon Mobil Corporation with a market share of 16%. Because of their geographic
diversity, larger and more complex refineries, integrated operations and greater
resources, some of the competitors may be better able to withstand volatile market
conditions, to obtain crude oil in times of shortage and to bear the economic risks
present in all areas of the refining industry. HollyFrontier is not engaged in petroleum
exploration and production activities and is not producing any of the crude oil
feedstocks at its refineries. Also, the company does not have a retail business and
because of that is dependent upon others for outlets for its refined products. Certain
numbers of HollyFrontier competitors, however, obtain a portion of their feedstocks
from company owned production and have a retail outlets. Competitors that have
their own production or widespread retail outlets, with brand name recognition, are at
times able to
43. Case Study Delta Sigma Theta
Delta has been able to focus on more important needs and issues at the time and have
reunited sorors with the organization, gaining more help and support for the
organization all while promoting all what Delta stands for.
The other change event relating to hazing, has been another successful proposal as
well. Many chapters within Delta Sigma Theta have either been known for or caught
with hazing physically and/or emotionally in the past. According to one previous
story, On November 20th 2010, the day before their official initiation, due to lack
of sleep the driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a tree. Two girls
were injured and two girls lost their lives in the tragic accident . Using this change
intervention, Delta has been able to not only own up to past horrendous misshapes,
but to promote non hazing as it is a very serious matter. More and more trainings,
informationals , sessions, and even videos and documents have been produced and
used for current members and new seeking candidates to stress the importance of non
tolerance of any type of behavior. Mistakes have been made, including the incident
that occurred in 2010. As we know that not every chapter may have been sought or
captured with hazing, a tremendous amount has been put to a stop and Delta
continues to reach the goal with 0%. Although with these devastating occurrences,
Delta has successfully ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yes, I am a strong believer of accomplishing and meeting the demands of the
organization itself but what about the accuracy and effectiveness from it? What about
those other members who disagree with the actions of the leader? In this case, it is
very essential to understand the connection amongst organizational traditions,
leadership behaviors, and the satisfaction of the organization/chapter
44. Examples Of Dark Elements In The Castle Of Otranto
What is the meaning of the notion Gothic? This word is generally used in relation to
dark elements. In the Word Histories and Mysteries From Abracatadabra to Zeus is
stated clearly that:
...Gothic is related to the name Goth used for one of those invading Germanic
tribes. The word Gothic, first recorded in 1611 in a reference of the language of
the Goths, was extended in sense in several ways, meaning Germanic , medieval,
not classical , barbarous and also an architectural style that was not Greek or
Roman. Horace Walpole applied the word Gothic to his novel The Castle of
Otranto, a Gothic Story (1765) in the sense medieval, not classical . From this novel
filled with scenes of terror and gloom in a medieval setting descended a literary
genre still popular today; from its subtitle descended the name for it ( 115).
The Gothic evokes feelings of mystery, leading simultaneously to the dramatic as well
as the sensational, such as incest.
Furthermore, the sublime is considered the most prominent characteristic of the
Gothic. There are certain general features applied to create the necessary atmosphere,
and by which a narration might be identified as a Gothic story (Hume 282). What is
actually the sublime and how it is related to the gothic fiction? A main... Show more

The ruined buildings, being sinister, arouse a pleasing melancholy while underground
passages, spooky basements and dark corridors are very common in gothic stories.
Furthermore shadows, moonlight and flickering candles strengthen the mysterious
and gloomy atmosphere the Gothic novel aims to convey. The functions of all there
mentioned are highlighted by the extreme weather and its thunders, which reinforce
the mystery, the dramatic and the sensational. The Gothic atmosphere is frequently
transmitted through castles or mansions and through raging storms, dark nights,
tyranny, incarceration, and torture (Morris
46. JUST ONE DRINK
JUST ONE DRINK is an intriguing, seductive thriller. The script is driven by themes
about evil, revenge, redemption, and forgiveness. It explores the idea that one can
never escape their past.
While there are engaging elements of the script with a potentially complex character
in the role of Tamara, overall the scriptwould benefit from more development,
especially in the area of structure, pace, tension, as well as further character
development.
First, the story opens in the past to set up the backstory. It s a creative choice to do
this, but not essential. The backstory can be revealed through dialogue or through the
grandmother s journal. Consider instead opening up with Tamara seducing or luring a
susceptible man to her home. Then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She has the potential of being a very complex and fascinating character (like in
FATAL ATTRACTION or BASIC INSTINCT), but this will require more
development. At the end, she acts like she has genuine feelings about Steve, but it s
not convincing.
As mentioned, Tamara and Steve also share no real chemistry with each other and
their relationship is never believable.
Steve could have been a more effective and likable character, but he also turns
sadistic when he enjoys killing Andrei versus struggling with his moral dilemma. He
essentially turned into a sadistic criminal, like the man he hates. The audience never
feels empathy for Steve or cares for him. It should be noted that it could have been a
powerful character study of watching Steve change from passive to aggressive if this
were really his story.
Andrei could be a more deceptive charmer. Why he s speaking at the school isn t
convincing. He really never says anything that warrants him speaking to a classroom.
Elevate his dialogue to be sharper and wittier. His dialogue sounds too forced and
contrived in the opening scene when he explains why he s sadistic. There s too much
48. Paraneoplastic Neurologic Syndrome (PNS)
Introduction
Paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes (PNS) are syndromes that result from
dysfunction of the nervous system, caused by a benign or malignant tumor via
mechanisms other than direct tumor cell infiltration, metastasis, coagulopathy,
infection or any treatment side effects [1]. All parts of the central and peripheral
nervous system may be affected by PNS and, as a result, signs and symptoms are
diverse. Most PNS of the central nervous system have in common a subacute course
leaving the patients severely disabled in weeks to months and inflammatory changes
in the CSF, including moderate lymphocytic pleocytosis, increased protein levels and
IgG index and presence of CSF specific oligoclonal bands[2]. Early recognition may
be difficult
