5. What do I need to get into
the Library?
 Your UEL ID card is your
Library card
 You need your ID card:
– To enter any of our libraries
– To borrow books

– To photocopy
 It will cost £12 to replace a
lost ID card
 Look after your ID card
 Do not let anyone use it
 You are responsible for
everything taken out on your
card
 You also need your ID card to
exit our Stratford Library

9. How long can I keep a book
for?
• All books can be
borrowed for:
• One week initially
• Short loans
• Students with known disability
can keep books for two weeks
at a time.
NB:
You can keep a book as long as
you need to but must bring it
back if it is requested by
another user

10. RETURN ITEMS LATE?
 If items are returned late, you will pay the following fines:
 One week Loan - £1 per day –
 Short Loan - 50p per hr
 You cannot borrow if your fines get up to £25 .
 You will have a seven day grace period to return books and if you
still do not return ,you will incur £8 fine per book

11. How can I pay fines?
 Fines can be paid in a number of ways:
 Via Chip and Pin at the Issue Desk
 Via cash payment at the Issue Desk
 Via Telephone payment when off campus with Chip and PIN
debit or credit card
 Via self service fine payment machine on Campus, using coins

12. How can i avoid paying
Fines?
• Loan items will be automatically renewed on the due date.
• Email will be sent to you if the item has been reserved and
needs to be returned.
• Check your email for library mail
Books will not be renewed automatically:
 If the item has been reserved by another user.
 In that case, you need to bring the books back

13. How do i find books or
articles on my reading list?
• Using the Library Search you
can search for :
– books, DVDs, and
electronic books
– Reserve and Renew books
– Search for Journal articles
– Request Interlibrary Loans
– Locate items on the shelf
– Search for digitised
resources
– NB: you need to be on the
Internet to access most of
the above functions as well
as read electronic books
and articles
– Reading all your
recommended readings
will help you get quickly
knowledgable about your
subject.

14. Your recommended reading
• Make sure you search
for all books you are
meant to read.
• This can be found in
your module
handbook.
• Once you have this,
use the Library search
to look for them
• They will either be in
print or in electronic
format.
• If they are print books,
locate them on the
shelves and borrow
them
• If they are electronic,
then you need your
Athens username and
password to read
them online.

items
Self service machine enables
you to:
• Borrow, return and renew
items
• Pay fines
• You need a PIN to take
books out.
• The initial PIN is 0000 –
ask Library staff to change
PIN.
• To take books out, press
your ID card on the reader
• Type your PIN
• Pass your books through
the laser.
Close your account and print out a
receipt of your transaction.
Keep receipts for your record.
All our Libraries have self service
