BEDFORD — Not all wom-
en are comprised of sugar, spice
and everything nice. Like their
male counterparts, they are
fallible humans, prone to mis-
takes.
A few decades ago, the pres-
ence of a woman in a jail cell
was a rare sight. Today, women
represent the fastest-growing
segment of the prison popula-
tion, surpassing male prison
population growth in all 50
states, according to the Insti-
tute on Women and Criminal
Justice. Though the pace has
ebbed since 2000, the rate at
which women are added to pris-
ons each year remains high.
The female population at
the Lawrence County Jail has
followed that trend. Arrests
of women spiked from 438 in
2003 to 547 in 2007. There
were 550 arrests in both 2008
and 2009.

said he utilizes
three eight-
bed blocks
to accommo-
date women
inmates. The
female popula-
tion at the jail
is currently 21.
Most prisoners
range in age from 18 to 30.
“If we have more than 24
female inmates it becomes a
problem because of the num-
ber of beds,” Craig said. “We
contact the courts, talk with of-
ficials about what can be done,

For Springville cattle farmer Alan
Armstrong, this weekend’s forecast
is one he hopes is right on.
Forecasters are calling for a cold
front to move through the area Sat-
urday evening which could bring
rain as well.
Armstrong said the summer’s
weather has been good for cattle
owners and row crop farmers, un-
til about two weeks ago.
“It’s been wet all summer,” Arm-
strong said. “And then it went from
wet to dry in about two weeks. It
just shows how quickly things can
turn around.”
Armstrong said farmers aren’t in
panic mode yet. But some rainfall
would help.
“If it continues like this, it could
cause some water shortages,” he
said. “But we’re not at that point
yet.”
Lawrence County Purdue Ex-
tension Educator Dave Redman
agreed.
“The pastures are starting to take
their toll,” he said. “There has been
a decline in pastures and grazing.
But it’s not been bad enough for
farmers to start supplemental feed-
ing.”
Redman said cattle farmers need
to make sure their herds have a
source of clean water and access to
shade.
Reducing stress by limiting
movement, he added, is also im-
portant.
As far as corn and soybeans,
things are pretty good, Redman
said.
The effect of hot temperatures
and dry weather will vary much in
different fields.
“It could disrupt some pollina-
tion,” he added. “But for the most
part, the corn is already pollinat-
ed.”
Late-planted corn could see
more problems with not properly
pollinating, which could reduce
yield, he added.

the recent weather: hot
and dry.
Just how hot?
Hot enough to can-
cel racing tonight at
Bloomington Motor
Speedway, according to
spokesman Ron Green.
That’s something that
hasn’t happened in 87
years at the clay oval
track.
An excessive heat
warning remains in ef-
fect through tonight,
said National Weather
Service meteorologist
Adam Baker. If highs
in Indianapolis hit 95
today, it will be the first
time since 1983 that
the city has hit temper-
atures of 95 or higher
five days in a row.
For the start of Au-
gust, the normal high is
84.5, Baker said. So far,
the average high has
been 89.3.
The normal average
temperature for this
time of year is 73.5, but
so far, the average has
been 77.7.
And just how dry has
it been?
Not a drop of rain has
fallen in Bloomington,
which puts the area far
below the August aver-
age of 3.99 inches, Bak-
er said.

I
t’s difficult for the average middle
or high school student to imag-
ine a future of higher education,
work, and family responsibilities. Yet
the decisions they make during these
years can have a major impact on
what happens later. The Chamber’s
Franklin Initiative offers activities and
experiences to help students under-
stand the connection.
“The basic mission of the
Franklin Initiative is the same as it’s
always been—that is to get young
people excited about their future
careers, their education, through
real-world, hands-on activities,” said
Matt Wysocki, Chamber director
of Workforce Initiatives.“What has
changed is the level of sophistication
that we’ve met that mission with.”
Although its goals and programs
have been the same since its inception
in 1997, the Franklin Initiative has
honed its programs to meet changing
needs.
“A lot of our core programs are
the same as they were back then,”
Wysocki said.“But we’ve been able to
find funding and just learning lessons
through the years about how to do
all of these things most effectively to
make it work.”
The Initiative offers several pro-
grams to give students the oppor-
tunities to think about and plan for
their future. These include the Reality
Store, Career Speakers Bureau, mock
