What is an Annotated Bibliography?
An Annotated Bibliography is similar to a
Works Cited (Links to an external site.)
list. But, for each entry cited, you also include a summary of the text and one or two sentences that explain how the source is important for your essay.
Why write an Annotated Bibliography?
An annotated bibliography helps you to organize your sources. Not only will you get your Works Cited list written, but you will also have a succinct explanation of each text that you plan to cite and an idea of how the source will be used in your essay. And, because the sources you find will find fairly easily on a 2-3 page annotated bibliography, you can refer to them as you write to remind yourself of the texts you have researched. Then, you can go to the original source text as needed. Also, I’d like to get a sense that you are on the right track with your essay.
What & When will I turn in?
When you turn in your annotated bibliography, I would also like you to include links of any online articles you are using . It is likely that you will have books, too, but you obviously won’t have links for those.
DO NOT COPY THE ABSTRACT FROM A DATABASE. You will need to write your own summary of the text to show your understanding of it. I will be able to see the abstract easily and won’t give you credit for any source that you annotate by merely copying the abstract from the database.
Your annotated bibliography is due by 11:59 PM Wednesday, May 27th.
While that's not for a few weeks, you'll want to be aware of it as you research so you can create the annotated bibliography as you find sources.
Grading the Annotated Bibliography
The annotated bibliography is worth 50 points
To receive credit for the Annotated Bibliography, it will need:
to be formatted in MLA
a "Claim Statement" (basically, a sentence that sums up what the current focus, or thesis is, for your persuasive essay. I understand that your claim statement may change, but I should know what tentative point of view you are taking on your issue and what your specific issue is when I read your claim statement).
at least 5 credible sources that are correctly punctuated and summarized in your own words
one or two sentences per source that explains why the source is important for your issue/essay
If you find sources after you turn in your annotated bibliography, you can add them to the Works Cited List that is submitted with your final draft.

What is the purpose of Modern Language Association (MLA)?
According to Hacker, there are three main objectives in MLA: “(1) supporting a
thesis, (2) citing your sources and avoiding plagiarism, and (3) integrating
quotations and other source material” (395).
You have already learned how to write a thesis and how to compose a well-
organized essay. Now it is time to learn how to include research to support your
ideas.
Why do I need to include research in my writing?
Quite simply, we do not know everything. We need to research whatever topic we
are discussing to learn more about it and also to support our claims. Hacker
explains, “expert opinion can give weight to your argument” (398). For example, if
I were writing a paper about Abraham Lincoln, I would already know some things
about him, but not all. If I wanted to emphasize his work towards ending slavery,
for example, it would be great to include scholarly research about this to support
my claims. Through research, I could find specific dates and legislation and other
important work that the president put forth towards this worthy cause.
Hacker writes, “in a research paper, you will draw on the work of other writers, and
you must document their contributions by citing your sources. Sources are cited for
two reasons: 1. to tell readers where your information comes from—so that they
can assess its reliability and, if interested, find and read the original sources. 2. to
give credit to the writers from whom you have borrowed words and ideas” (399).
The only exception is common knowledge. This is information that you already
knew (without looking it up) or is considered to be general knowledge. (Example:
most people know that New York City is referred to as “The Big Apple.” Therefore,
there is no need to cite a source for that.) However, if you are in doubt, it is better
to be safe than sorry; go ahead and cite the source.
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is taking material from a source and including it in your paper as if you
wrote it yourself, without giving any credit to the original author. This can be
material from articles, books, the internet, other students’ essays, or a variety of
other materials.
To avoid plagiarism, you may either use direct quotes or paraphrase the
material. A direct quote is material that is copied word for word, EXACTLY as the
author has written it. You must put quotation marks around a direct quote.
When you paraphrase, you put what is written in your own words. (Hint: the best
way to paraphrase is to read the material, completely look away from it, and then
rewrite it in your own words. Looking away from the article will help you resist
including language that is too close to the original text.)

- 1. Citing Sources Tips and Tricks to Make Life Easier
- 2. Creating citations is easier than ever before, since many databases include options for citing. This presentation will show you 3 easy ways to cite: directly out of the catalog, out of many databases, and through a citation generator.
- 3. ECU Libraries Catalog To cite a book from the catalog, first locate the book in the catalog.
- 4. Click the option on the lower left to Cite this Item. A new window opens with options for citing in APA, MLA, and more. The citation is ready to copy in to your paper.
- 5. Citing from a Database ECU Libraries subscribe to over 400 databases, and not all databases work the same. However, many of them have the option to create a citation.
- 6. You can do this in one of two ways. If you find the article and wish to simply see the citation, many databases have a button that simply says “Cite.”
- 7. The other way of doing this is to use a Folder. First, find articles that you will use for your paper. As you locate the articles, click Add to Folder, which will add your chosen articles to a temporary holding place—kind of like a shopping cart on a web store. Look for something like this: Note: OneSearch on the library homepage also functions in this way.
- 8. Send to Email After you are done with your research in the database, click in to the folder and choose the option to Email. You will be able to specify a citation style at this time. The citation will come with the article in an email.
- 9. But Wait! What if I did not do this during my research? Is there anything I can do?
- 10. Citation Generators Citation Generators are online forms that allow you to fill in information about an article and get a citation in the correct style.
- 11. Links Some citation generators include NCSU’s Citation Generator and Knight Cite. Click these links to be taken to a citation generator. If you have questions, Ask a Librarian!
